Flying Fruit
 

Does anyone know if it is okay to fly fruit in from another state. My parents have meyer lemon trees in Florida and I want to bring some back to Alabama on the plane with me. I know a few years ago they wouldn't let you do this because of med fly.

While I do not know for sure as far as current situation, we have brought citrus back from Florida every winter. No signs at airport, no problems. Only time we have encountered the fruit police is trying to bring cherries into California (from Oregon) and pears into the Bahamas (it was a pregnancy craving thing)

Why not call and ask your airlines?

From the Florida Dept. of Agriculture:

Florida is currently under a statewide quarantine by the USDA and no citrus may leave the state unless the USDA has issued a limited permit. No Florida grown citrus may enter any citrus producing states or territories.

It's because of citrus canker disease.
