Flying from Oahu to Maui for the day -- any tips?

We'll be staying on oahu the week after Christmas, and are thinking of visiting friends on maui for the day.

Right now, I see round trip flights on GO! (budget airline?) for $100 (non refundable).

I wasn't sure if ...
(1) this is the basic going rate for inter-island travel
(2) these rates tend to fluctuate much or get much more expensive at the last minute.
(3) if this is a desirable airlines to travel with or if i should look elsewhere.

thanks for any tips!!

Aloha dina4,

I have heard of lower fares, but $100 round trip is reasonable. If you happen to have frequent flyer miles to burn, most domestic airlines are partners with Hawaiian Airlines and you may choose to redeem your miles for the interisland flight(s), where the number of miles varies between 5,000 to 10,000.

We flew Go! in March interisland between Maui and Oahu. The jets are small CRJ's (100/200) with about 50 seats with open seating and are smaller than what Hawaiian or even Aloha used to operate. Departing from Oahu to Maui was from a terminal that was located much farther away from the other terminals where Hawaiian Airlines and mainland airlines depart.

Thanks for your reply John!

I didn't think of redeeming airline miles. That might work out great for us. I'll look into it.

Do you happen to know if the "point/mile" seats book up really far in advance?

Thanks again,
dina

Don't wait too long to book, especially if you're going to redeem points. That is peak season in the islands.

If you can't use points, don't worry too much about the airline. It's just a short 20-minutes trip from Oahu to Maui, so the size of the plane won't make much difference. Go!, Mokulele, and Hawaiian are all good. Just look for the best fare.
