Fly Your Flag Monday

Don't forget to fly your flag Monday in honor of those killed in the 9/11 attacks.
Mahalo

cmcfong Sep 8th, 2006 11:15 AM

This is a wonderful way to memorialize the heroes and losses of those dreadful attacks.

BayouGal Sep 8th, 2006 11:23 AM

Excellent idea, and thanks for the reminder!

jetset1 Sep 8th, 2006 12:04 PM

I live in downtown Toronto and the US flags have started to go up to commemorate the date here. We lost so few of our citizens compared to you who live in New York, but we share the sorrow at this time. There is a ceremony here on Monday.

cmcfong Sep 8th, 2006 12:27 PM

Wow, LJ, that's a beautiful thing. I remember seeing all the USA flags in Paris after 9/11. So touching. Truly it was a tragedy for all the world.

mikemo Sep 8th, 2006 12:35 PM

We fly the US and MX flags together here for all of September.
Are any other nations more closely connected?

We normally have our flag out 24/7, but it got caught on a hook and tore a week or so ago. Have not bought a new one yet. Besides the one in the shadow box, all we have is the one from the carrier...too bad we don't have a large enough flag pole for that! Guess we need to get out and replace our flag tomorrow. Thanks for the great idea:)

jbass Sep 8th, 2006 01:17 PM

I bought a flag for July 4th and continued to fly it 24/7 until the end of July when someone took it and threw it in a dumpster! across the street from me. Didn't realize it was MY flag as I watched someone else fish it out and take it. Not sure what the message was. :'(

BayouGal Sep 8th, 2006 01:36 PM

jbass, that's horrible, and weird. Does stuff like that happen often in your neighborhood?

jbass Sep 8th, 2006 01:51 PM

I live on a corner near a lake with LOTS of foot traffic; people feel entitled to "help themselves" to anything in my yard or on my front porch. I have a replacement flag now so will launch it just for Monday. :-d

sundowner Sep 8th, 2006 02:40 PM

I saw mention of flying the flags on 9/11 on Snopes. The article said they should be at half-staff. If you are interested see here http://www.snopes.com/rumors/tributes/flytheflag.asp

BayouGal Sep 8th, 2006 02:44 PM

My staff is about the same size as my flag, so that will have to do.

Neopolitan Sep 8th, 2006 02:44 PM

Ah sundowner, you answered my question. In reading through all this I kept wondering if they should be at half mast.

BayouGal Sep 8th, 2006 02:47 PM

It would be very touching to see them all at half staff, but most people have the smaller poles on their homes that basically just accommodate the flag itself.

BayouGal Sep 8th, 2006 02:51 PM

That Urban Legends article says that if you cannot fly your fly at half staff, then hang a black ribbon or streamer the same width as a stripe on the flag and the same length as the flag from the top of the flag.

wantsomesun Sep 8th, 2006 04:02 PM

That is such a great idea, thank you for speading the word.

If you haven't heard the George Washington Bridge is addorned with the largest flag made in honor of the World Trade Center. I wanted to go out tonight and see if the "lights" are on.

There will be many ceremonies in the City and the surrounding areas this weekend and on Monday.

You might do a moment silence at 8:46 (I think is the moment the first plane crashed into the North Tower)

I posted this earlier, but anyone interested who will be in the city, there is a Community sing of the Mozart Requium at Carnegie Hall at 12:30. The concert is being presented by the Juilliard Chorus and Orchestra, and the audience will be invited to sing. It should be a moving tribute to 9/11, and it is so healing to be in the audience and have music going on all around you. The tickets for the concert are FREE, (2 per person) but you must be in line early to get them. I will be one of the singers and plan on getting there around 8am, as I am sure there will be a long line.

Mary2Go Sep 8th, 2006 05:50 PM

My son will be flying home from weekend trip to NYC Monday on an American flight. He was wondering if the pilot would make any mention of the event.

matnikstym Sep 8th, 2006 06:19 PM

Let us know Mary2go.

topping

L84SKY Sep 9th, 2006 07:19 AM

Our flag is out every day but thanks for the reminder matnikstym.

I remember in the days after 9/11 seeing flags on the houses and on cars. It was sad but there was the joy in that we united as a country. Strangers greeted each other on the street, we waved at others with flags. White, Black and Hispanic - Christian, Atheists or Jewish, we saw each other only as fellow Americans.
I live in San Diego and the cars from Front B.C Mexico were showing flags. The terrorist showed us who we are deep down as a country.
It reminded me then as it does now, "what you meant for evil, Spirit meant for good."

matnikstym Sep 10th, 2006 07:25 PM

ttt for tomorrow

jetset1 Sep 10th, 2006 07:32 PM

matman~ I have my flag all ready.. we had rain today so I took it down til tomorrow.
((*))Thanks for the reminder again, and have a nice evening in paradise.

BayouGal Sep 10th, 2006 07:38 PM

Please keep this topped.

BayouGal Sep 10th, 2006 08:15 PM

going up again

Jed Sep 11th, 2006 05:55 AM

I just put it outside. Many, many thanks.**==

L84SKY Sep 11th, 2006 06:23 AM

My husband and I were just talking about this and our flag is flying but we want to do more. We've decided to help clean up a public space today, in a way to make America a better place. Well, at least a tidier place.

jetset1 Sep 11th, 2006 09:22 AM

I put my flag out this morning. We had some cloud bursts yesterday and I had put it inside.

As luck would have it, my youngest son had forgotten a math paper, and I ran to the school to deliver it.

When I returned home, my neighbor, a police officer, was leaving for work. He waved and pointed at our flag over the garage.

I'm glad he wanted to let me know how he felt. He is a veteran and usually has a flag out on holidays, but I notice he didn't have it out today. I don't know his reason, but it meant something to him that ours was on display.

Just wanted to share. J.

John Sep 11th, 2006 11:03 AM

Unless I'm out of town, my flag flies every day. Since It is not lit at night I also take it in every night. Flag protocol!

Little_Man Sep 11th, 2006 05:04 PM

I was the first one on my street to put out my flag on 9/11, before any one else in my neighborhood thought of it.
Today, I couldn't bring myself to do it. The shame I feel about my president and the false war he's taken us into has stolen away the pride I used to feel in that flag. I saw others' flags and felt badly, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it...

Fodorite018 Sep 11th, 2006 05:21 PM

Can we please leave the politics out of this?

My DH purchased a new flag this weekend, to replace the torn one. Our flag flies most of the time, and is lit at night. Now living in Oregon, the rain is the only problem. I hate taking it down...but am glad that at least when we have to do that our children know how to handle it and do it properly.
