Unless you just want to pay big bucks to fly somewhere, you are already RIGHT ON one of the best salmon rivers (as long as they are on the move).
Just down the road is the confluence of the Russian and Kenai Rivers and you will find lots of locals fishing here because it is a great place to catch fish. You can hire a guide to float and fish--I'm sure the hotel can help with that. |

THANKS for the reply! Thought process on fly out was maybe a better chance of hooking a fish. Some articles I have read sounds like the river is very crowded especially at the start of the silver salmon runs for the year. If this is not the case(don't like to spend big bucks unless getting a bang) do you have any Company you would recommend? |
Yes this is one of the MOST crowded fishing areas in Alaska. So much so there are talks of limiting the number of guides. Will you have a car??? You can drive to Homer as well as Seward for great fishing as well?

Thank you very much for the reply No, will not have a car, will be in afternoon of June 24 and out A.M. of June 26th at princess Kenai enough time for one day fishing only (June 25th). |
Youngblood, many people fish along Kenai River but there is enough room and plenty of fish for everyone and it is so much fun and excitement to be among fish and others like yourself. Try it and you will not regret.

Without a car you are very limited to a costly tour. Most flights don't leave from the area- a lot go out of Soldotna- 50 miles away. I would call the Kenai lodge and see if they can arrange any fly in fishing - IF you still want to go that route?

June 25 will be near the peak of the King (Chinook) salmon run in the river below Skilak Lake, which is several miles downstream from your hotel. It's very likely that many of the guide services will be booked already, so you should phone the hotel to see if they can let their fingers do the walking for you. Flying in is not necessary unless you want to get some upcountry trout fishing in; it's quite early in the season for most upland areas anyway. The big crowds in that area won't hit until the Red salmon start showing up at the Russian River, when the "combat fishing" season really begins, sometime after July 1.
Going on a float trip below Skilak is very enjoyable - not just Kings, but lots of Dolly Varden char, big Rainbows, eagles in the sky, ungulates or carnivores occasionally visible riverside, and the Kenai is so big that crowding is seldom an issue. COLD water and air, though, so dress appropriately. |
Thanks!!! everyone for all the help
