Fly Fishing School - Any suggestions?
I'd like to combine a vacation with some fly-fishing instruction (I've never gone fly-fishing). Any recomendations for instruction in late April or early October? I was considering New Mexico, Wyoming, Vermont, New York, but am open to suggestions for fishing instruction anywhere else. Good instruction, good accomodations, good weather are "Musts", price is not of primary concern.

Orvis pretty much sets the standard for fly-fishing schools. I believe LL Bean also has a school. Bear in mind, however, that many if not most guides are also excellent instructors, so you may not want to limit yourself to the formal schools.

Any of the outfitters listed in the national fly-fishing magazines should be able to provide you with an experience that will combine instruction with more actual fishing than the schools feature, likely in a better location than the schools can provide. Call them and describe what your expectations are and I am sure that most will be able to accomodate you. I can personally recommend Tim Linehan on the Kootenai River in northwest Montana and Phil Gonzalez on the Big Horn in the south-central part of the state, but there are others in each of the locations you mentioned.

You may also want to try posting your question on the Fly Fisherman Magazine website (www.flyshop.com).

Frank,

Consider the Gallatin River south of Bozeman, Montana. I work for a great lodge with stocked ponds that you can practice on and then graduate to the Gallatin, Madison, Yellowstone or Henry's Fork rivers to get the true experience. We work closely with Gallatin River Guides, Big Sky, Montana for all our guide services and they are one of the best in Southwest Montana. As far as accommodations go, since I am an employee, I will let you decide, but write if you want more information. Good Luck.
