Fly-fishing in Colorado?
I just got back from an amazing Colorado trip and one of the highlights was definitely fly-fishing. I've fished in lakes and bays before but this was new to me. I especially liked catch-and-release, and catching 5 trout!
I went in a private stream near Telluride with a guide but I'd love to hear other recommendations for places to go. What are your favorite places to go fly-fishing in Colorado? |
Deckers just south of Denver is wonderful stream. The Blue River near Silverthorn, and the really funny place is the tail waters of Dillon Dam right behind the outlet shops in Silverthorn. The trout are huge and feed on the tiniest of shrimp "flies"--#26 hooks, as I recall.
Of course the Roaring Fork near Aspen. Lots of good places and beautiful country. |
Gretchen,
Somehow I just knew you'd be jumping all over this one. Had any luck lately? Cate_W, This is one of those times I wish this board had instant messaging. I'd send you a good long (private) list. But, like most fishermen I tend to be very protective of my best secret spots, so I'll just mention 2 (and if you breathe a word to any one, I may have to "feed you to the fishes"........ if ya knows what I mean!). The Colorado River upstream of the Pumphouse Recreation Area (Bureau of Land Management) west of Kremmling. The Animas River right in downtown Durango. |
Ah, c'mon. Send me your list. Be a sport!! We'll only get there once a year--or less!!
But we did see a young man pull a 30 inch trout out of the river at Deckers. It was a monster--but he did have a guide!! |
Hey, I'll take you to lunch!! How about that!!

Did you just fish in the river or did you float? We love to fly fish from a boat and float the Gunnison River usually going with either Dragonfly Anglers out of Crested Butte or Three Rivers out of Almont. Floating is great because sometimes it gives you a breeze, you get to see more of the river and the country side and if one spot isn't biting, it is on to another. We also find it a little more challenging mending the line and following the drift in the currents. Plus, my dad's knees have gotten bad and he's unsteady so standing in a moving stream is not ideal for him, so the boats are the perfect way to fish.

Gretchen,
Lunch is when the hatches start to come off the water. It'll have to be breakfast. |
Thanks everyone for sharing your favorite places.
williams - I only fished from the river but next time I would love to float, that sounds so nice. |
