Fly/Drive to Arctic Circle

Has anyone done the Fly/Drive tour with Northern Alaska Tour Co to the Arctic Circle out of Fairbanks? Sounds interesting?

I've driven north of the Arctic Circle, and I would recommend spending the money for such an adventure ONLY if you want the "distinction" of having done so. There's not much of anything up there, just a sign saying you're at the Circle. Compared to the rest of Alaska, it's just not that interesting.

But, if that's how you want to spend your money, go ahead.

DH and I did not do the fly/drive, but did the bus from the airport. Boring, boring boring. And once we finally got there over narrow, dirt, very rough roads all there was there was a sign. Tour guide laid down a piece of red carpet, and we all took out pictures. Few picnic tables and she had some brownies that we sat and ate, back on the bus over the same of course roads. We had to be at the Tour company at 7a.m. from Fairbanks of course and did not get back to the company until after midnight. The best part was coming back into Fairbanks at 12:10a.m. and the sun was just going down. Got some really great pictures of that.

I would take that $640 (2 x $319 as I understand) and use it for a flightseeing trip from Lake Hood in Anchorage or something comparable in Fairbanks. Believe me, the Arctic Circle (and the cheesy certificates) are no great shakes compared to a light plane ride through serious wilderness.

If a day trip Kotzebue is offered, I think you would enjoy it. We flew from Anchorage to Kotzebue. A quide picked us up at the airport and drove us around the village and tundra. We had lunch at, I believe, the one and only restaurant by the water and returned to the airport. It was a day we enjoyed because their culture is so different.

I have done this tour, and highly recommend it. It was excellent and this company is very well organized. Actually have done it twice.
