I would only add a few things: Take a ferry across the Caladesi Island (from Honeymoon Island), and spend some time at the beach there.

Also, the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa is lovely. It's very compact, and the landscaping is just so pretty. You could come over to Tampa to the Zoo one morning, and then drive to Ybor City and eat lunch at the Columbia. The aquarium is near Ybor, if you're interested.

Also, no one mentioned Fort Desoto, which is down past St. Pete. It's kind of interesting. But hot as blazes walking around there in the summer, if that's when you're going.

And I always love to go hiking in the Hillsborough State Park. It's old Florida, and just beautiful. I used to swim there as a girl, but now there are too many alligators in the water, or so I hear. It's east of Tampa, though, off of Highway 301. You could visit the zoo, and then picnic at Hillsborough State Park, which is about 30 minutes (maybe more) on past the zoo. That would make sense.

Oh, and drink Cuban coffee -- cafe con leche. Yum!

Thanks so much for the info thus far. I thought I read somewhere that the "Don Cesar" has small rooms, is it true? Tandori_Girl, I read in one of the threads you recommend suite apartment at Don Cesar? Is that the Beach House suites or something different entirely? Don Cesar looks very interesting but we just don't want to be cramped. Is it walking distance to things. I am a bit confused between SPB and just St Pete. How far are they to each other? Also how does one get to Treasure Island if we are staying at SPB. Thanks again.
