Florida vacation - seeking opinions

We would like to take a moderately active vacation in late May - some kayaking, some snorkeling, etc, for about 10 days. We live on the East coast. Is Florida would be a good destination ? Is it safe there ? Or may be we better go to some Carribean island (though, I guess, food and water quality would be a concern there) ?

Could you please elaborate - why the Keys ? Also, will we be able to rent a vacation apartment there, or hotel is the only option ?

I'll agree w/the Keys in general. You can rent most any type of place that suits your needs. Key Largo & others will be best for snorkeling. See - fla-keys.com - The Dry Tortugas (& others) from Key West would also suit. Your questions reek of trolling - is Fla. safe ? Any idea how big Fla. is & how silly the question ? Water & food in the Caribbean safe ? Yes, it is, Mexico is where you have to worry more about such things.

The Keys have better snorkeling than mainland Florida. Kayaking around the back country and undeveloped keys is a unique experience. The Keys are absolutely safe. There are excellent rental condos in Islamorada, Marathon or Key West.

Thanks a lot for your replies. I checked out rentals in Islamorada, Marathon, and Key West, and they seem to be pretty expensive (at least per night) - $120 and more. Is there any reason why Keys are so more expensive than, let's say, Maui ?

Hey SAnParis2, I am not trolling, just asking. I'm relatively new to this country.

Lots easier to get there.

John Pennekamp State Park on Key Large is the only underwater reef park in the US. If what you like to do is snorkel, I would start my search there. If you like to fish, Islamorada or Marathon. If you like to hang out in cafes and drink, Key West.
