From relatives in Coral Springs, nw of Ft. Lauderdale, I learned that they had just been given an estimate of 3 more weeks without power, when their lights came on. For everyone there, I hope the FPL estimates are equally exaggerated -- it gets old, and cold, quickly!

Keep in mind the tourist areas will be up and running if they aren't already.
I heard all of Miami Beach has power. |
First of the places up were the Miami Int'l. Airport and Miami Beach, however, to get from the airport to the beach, you need gas, so fill up the rental and plan on staying on the Beach. many local folk are renting out hotel rooms throughout the area.
check out www.herald.com (miami Herald) for more and better local information than I have). Good luck! |
Excellent point!

Many areas without power are because of very local issues such as downed power poles - in my brother's city (Lantana - Central Palm Beach County) - half of his street got power Friday night, but the power workers said the rest of the street would take at least a week longer because of infrastructure damage.
He says it appears that larger areas effected by larger problems - such as big transformers - have had power restored faster. Many shopping malls are now open, although some stores within each are closed. He said if you know where to go, gas lines are shorter than 1/2 hour (as of yesterday). Most supermarkets are open and many have a full range of items with only spot shortages. |
