Florida Keys vs. Ft. Lauderdale area
We are planning a trip to Florida for Easter week 2007 and are debating between the Southeast Coast (Ft. Lauderdale or we are open to other suggestions) or the Keys.
Extended family with kids ages 4,6, 11,14,17 with 6 middle-aged adults and 2 older grandparents, one of whom has difficulty with stairs are all going on this trip.
We like to do beach stuff, snorkel (no scuba), golf x 1 day and enjoy a pool. Not into fishing, but might be into renting a boat for a day and sailing. Any suggestions?

Definitely a condo or motel with kitchen.
Many of the charming motels in the quaint Lauderdale-by-the-Sea have full kitchens.
Check out www.Sunny.org for a wealth of dining, shopping, and lodging information.

Easter week in Ft. Lauderdale books up really early, so you shd book it asap....especially for that many people. You will probably need 3 condos.

I 2nd the Lauderdale by the Sea suggestions, if you choose Ft Lauderdale. It has more charm and is prettier, and cleaner and less jammed with spring breakers. Plus it is close enough to Ft Lauderdale attractions if you would like to visit them.
But how about the West Coast of FL? We vacationed with a large family group in Naples, and everyone loved it.

Thanks for the L-by-the Sea recommendations.
We've stayed on Sanibel Island multiple times and I thought our teenagers would be a bit bored on the West side. There never seems to be much surf there.
Also, maybe I have the wrong idea of it being "Wrinkles Beach" over there?
What made it a great trip for you family?

If you go to www.tug2.net you can post a "Want to Rent" ad for Easter week. That might work for you.

I'd 3rd the Lauderdale-by-the-Sea location. It is a really nice beachtown with no motels over 3 stories so even if you stay across El Mar Drive from the ocean you still feel close to it because there are not high rise condos to block it. The town has a small mall (on A1A), with a Publix grocery store and Eckerd drug store, which is right down the block from Coral Key Inn, which I stayed at twice, and many other motels within easy walking distance.
Also, the Keys do extend and we did a daytrip to the Plantation Key and turned around to go to Key Largo (north keys). Ft. Lauderdale is only 26 miles from Miami and Key Largo isn't far from Miami. It was a beautiful drive and from the road you could see swampland where the Everglade National Park entrance began and extended for a few miles. We stopped and did a glass bottom boat tour out to the molasses key leaving from John Pennekamp State Park which wasn't that expensive. What was wonderful was seeing the mangroves and bird life on the trees while our charter boat traveled out in the ocean 7 miles.
