florida keys or fort lauderdale

Hi - my family is planning an easter week 2007 vacation. We can't decide between a week in the keys or in fort lauderdale. Any opinions. Also, feedback on Hawk's Cay in Duck key and on Lago mar in Fort Lauderdale would be appreciated. We are parents, one teen and an 11 year old. Thanks.

If you want a beach, go to Ft.Lauderdale, if not, the keys.

Hawk's Cay is kind of in the middle of nowhere but since it is Easter Break, your kids would meet plenty of freinds.

My pick would be Largo Mar.

If you do not go to Key West there are not REAL beaches in the Keys. It is more of a "rent a boat place" to do things. Key west can be fun for everyone, lots to do, a 3 hour drive from Miami, but be careful of lots of traffic....just 2 lane roads all the way. Ft Lauderdale is an adult place except for the beaches and a new science hall. I used to keep ayacht there. i like Ft lauderdale, but not with kids. paul

Disagree w/ Paul...we often go to FLL & the kids love it! We stay @ Lago Mar. Reserve now b/c Easter may already be fully booked. Lots of return guests @ LM! :)

We spend each February in the keys. I think that you might enjoy Key West. If you can, fly there directly. There is lots to do and there are some pretty nice beaches. Also, fishing trips can be arranged. I wouldn't pick Hawk's Cay. As noted, this is pretty isolated.

For any of these destinations I think you want to get your arrangements made. Florida gets very busy over holidays that include a school break and prices do go up.
