Florida Keys late July early August

We have a chance to go to the Keys with our daughter. I've read the posts about poor beaches. Given the heat will we be better off near Key Largo or on Islamorada? My daughter is interested in diving if possible - otherwise snorkeling.

The heat will be intense regardless of your location.

The heat and humidity will be awful in the keys for either month.

And also it is now hurricane season. Bertha is now heading towards that way, not known as yet if it will go up the Atlantic side or Gulf side.

Dancingqueen, 11 years in Florida must have changed me, because heat and humidity in the Keys in summer doesn't bother me. There's almost always a nice breeze, and we tend to take it easy during the hottest part of the day. Gekko is correct that your location in the Keys won't make a difference as far as heat goes.

As of tonight, Hurricane Bertha is predicted to head north, coming close to Bermuda, nowhere near Florida.

I've been there in August. While it was hot and humid, I still had a great time. Loved the snorkeling. I certainly wouldn't hesitate to go back there in any month of the year.

Previous posters were correct about the heat. Key Largo offers Pennekamp State Park for snorkeling on the reef.

Key Largo and Islamorada both have dive shops offering party trips.

Key Largo and Islamorada are about 45 minutes apart. Weather is the same in both locations. Both cities have all ranges of hotels. I have more experience in Islamorada and enjoy the restaurants more in Islamorada.

Islamorada is 45 minutes closer to Key West or Marathon if you are planning on exploring all the Keys.

This site has many threads on destinations and restaurants in the Keys.

Bertha is not heading towards the Keys or any other part of the USA.

Hi - my wife and I are thinking of heading to the keys for the 3rd and 4th weeks in September - any advice on whether this is a crazy time to go, or what the weather is generally like at that time? Thanks

SusanCS Jul 8th, 2008 12:32 PM

Bobster - same as in August - HOT and HUMID. Also the (more-or-less) height of hurricane season.
