The only reason I'm responding to this is because nobody else has. It's been years and years since we were at Cheeca Lodge, and since then it's burned to the ground and been rebuilt. However, I remember it as being very family-friendly and the grounds were really nice. Next door is the Moorings Village, which is also great.
The advantage to Cheeca Lodge over Hawks Cay is that there are lots of other things to do nearby.
We've only driven by Hawks Cay, and though it gets good recommendations, it's really isolated. In order to get to anything outside the resort, you'll have to leave the cay and drive a while - maybe 20 minutes or so. If I were you, I'd check both resorts for activities for teens (realizing your daughter is still 12) and plan accordingly.
I hope someone else will respond, and if not, I hope this'll be better than nothing!

I've stayed at Hawk's Cay a couple years ago with our kids who were tweens at the time....we really enjoyed it; did not feel isolated at all. We took a day & drove down to Key West (I think it was less than 1 hour). We are not usually big on dining at a resort so I'm sure we drove to restaurants at night. When I was there, parts were a bit outdated but I believe it has been fully renovated since my visit. I would not hesitate to stay there again, especially with kids.
I have not stayed at Cheeca, but have several friends that do stay there frequently & really enjoy it. I think its a bit more upscale.

We have been staying at hawks cay for the past 7 years we love it there. It is a bit more closer to some of the things to see. Such as the dolphin research center and key west. Taking a trip one day to key west is a must. leave about 4 get there for 5 spend time in mallory square eat dinner and go back to the resort but don't leave to late because i am pretty much wiped out on the drive home. Cheeca is a bit more up scale but doesnt really matter especially for a family vacation.
