Anyone able to recommend Cheeca Lodge? Also, luxury accomodations in Key West? Any news on Reach Resort or Casa Marina? Thanks!

I don't know what it's like now, but when the Ocean Key Resort was the Ocean Key House, it was wonderful. They still have a wonderful "sunset pier" for snacks and drinks (and views), but I haven't been inside for awhile.

Cheeca lodge accomodations depend on how much you spend and your distance from the water...there are several types of room and some are a walk away from the action...It also draws families, so if you want the quiet luxury getaway...there may be better choices...

For Key West, Luxury means smaller boutique hotel... although we have stayed in a suite at Casa Marina, it is not truly the Key West experience...

The Ocean Key is at the foot of Duval, right in the heart of the action, yet it is still more of a chain type hotel experience... nice yet still not truly Key West....

Drumroll... the Key West Luxury experience can be found at either The Marquesa Hotel or the Gardens Hotel... the Island style grounds and buildings give you the privacy you want just a short walk from Duval...

I can remember floating on a pool raft at the Gardens and thinking to myself...life can't get any better...
a keylime beneigh(sp) for breakfast... dinner at Marquesa restaurant after a sunset catamaran sail... life is wonderful....

Thanks, these are both helpful. Does the Ocean Key sit on the beach. I know Key West is low on beaches. Sounds great. I wasn't specific but I have two little kids so we won't be able to let it rip while we're there but I still want the nice place to stay. I don't have limitless funds but $300 or so is okay per night. If I can, I love small luxury hotels and leading hotels of the world properties. With my boys (1 & 3) a beach for part of the day is probably easiest. We're not spending the entire time in the Keys. I heard Marco Island is nice...

It's very nice, with large waterfront rooms. It also has a small private beach that would be great for your little ones.

With the little ones, you will be better off with a chain like the Hilton...the Boutiques won't allow kids... I don't think that Key West is a great choice for families with small ones like yours... with small limited beaches and a party atmosphere, you may be better off stopping at Islamorada... when I took my little ones, we stayed at the Hampton Inn on Islamorada...perfect for kids, pool, beach, outback steakhouse, nice rooms...reasonably priced and then add a day trip to key West...

The Pier House has a top optional beach...I don't consider it to be particularly child-friendly. The Ocean Key is on the water, but has no beach at all. It is, however, a very nice place and if you could afford a Junior Suite, it'd be a great place for you and your children - the suites have kitchens.

The Island City House is very popular with families. I'm not sure that the Marquesa and Gardens allow young children.

The Casa Marina has recently sold and the reviews so far have not been positive. The hotel had major damage from the last hurricane and coupled with the sale, I don't think I'd recommend it. I've never heard very good reviews of the Reach at all.

A final word on beaches in the keys: the keys are coral, so ALL beaches are man-made and most are tiny. If you're looking for a beach destination, you'd probably be happier in another part of Florida.

Not luxury, but one of the best places to stay in Key West, IMHO, is the Eden House hotel.
