Florida Gulf Coast - Please help!

We are traveling to Disney in late September and then spending a few days on the Florida Gulf Coast before flying home to Michigan. Have never been to this part of Florida and we are looking for suggestions on where to stay - which city and which hotel? Would like something right on the beach, don't want to spend more than $175/night. Traveling with three children ages 13, 11, 7. Thanks!!

With regard to the gulf coast of Florida, we like Destin. Great Beaches. Fairly reasonable. You can take small trips to Grayton Beach.A small beautiful beach town. Eat at the Red Bard restaurant.

The Panhandle has great beaches but is not close to Disney!

Are you flying in and out of Orlando?
I like the beaches at Clearwater or Treasure Island, which would be the easiest and closest to get to and from Orlando. I'm guessing the kids will still want to do more than just lounge on a beach? A day at Busch Gardens or other attractions would be fun and easy from there.

The Upper Gulf Coast would be closest Orlando. This includes: Clearwater Beach, Indian Rocks, Indian Shores, Treasure Island, St Pete Beach, Siesta Key. You have lots of choices, especially in September. Check out vrbo if you want a condo on the beach - http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/florida We've stayed in and recommended many times the Island Inn on Treasure Island. http://www.islandinnresort.com/ (get an oceanfront room)

You can also type in, say, 'St Pete Beach Accomodation' or 'Siesta Key accomodation' up top in the seach square and it will bring up posts that include recommendations.

Clearwater beach would be best for the children, with themed boat trips and other childrens activities. You can also drive along to visit other resorts such as St. Pete's beach and Madeira Beach (visit St. Johns Pass)a collection of shops, restaurants and boat trips.
However, we visited Clearwater in May 2007 and there were extensive road works everywhere. It may be completed by now, but check it out before you consider going.
