Dukey1 and NewbE, I just had a flash of envy. Here in the pretty-much-dead-center of the state (Clermont, just west of Orlando), it is so much more humid as a rule, without those lovely breezes. Mold (black and gross) grows so readily that the homeowners association sends ugly letters and assesses penalties if you don't get your drive and sidewalks powerwashed frequently during the summer. It gets indoors, too, obviously. It's a daily battle.

DH has gotten so sensitive to it over the years that we are now searching for another location to move to that will offer less humidity and mold. That means we'll be returning to colder winters, I imagine. (BTW, I grew up in the East Bay area of San Francisco.)

sludick, some of our family live in Polk County, in the center of the state, and it is much stiller there. I can't say it's literally more humid--the stats don't bear that out. But the lack of a breeze can make it feel so.

That said, they don't seem to struggle with mold the way you describe...I can't explain that. Nor do any of them have allergies, although it's true they are mostly Florida natives. (I don't know if allergies follow logic, mine have been different everywhere we've lived.)

I think it may depend much on the tree cover over their house and neighborhood. Our quarter-acre lot has 9 mature trees, 3 of them oaks, and our neighbor's oak tree overhangs us as well. We also live adjacent to a swampy area and a couple of lakes.

I appreciate people saying that summers in various places "up north" can be just as hot, humid, and miserable as in Florida. But most of those comments seem to be missing one point. A couple weeks ago in NJ we had three days of that kind of weather -- really miserable -- but it was just that -- three days. That same kind of weather goes on almost without relief for four to five months in Florida. Sure if you're near the water you can get nice breezes and sometimes at night it cools off a bit in the evenings, but there's a world of difference between the length of time it STAYS hot and humid in Florida as opposed to various places up north. Just thought it was worth pointing out.

That was the thing that bothered us most about winters in Minnesota--not the fact that any one day could be bitterly cold, but the sheer length of the cold weather. November-March was you-have-to-wear-a-warm-coat cold, and in October and April you wore the same coat only without the hat and scarf. Okay, maybe just half of October and April were cold weeks, but I still count 6 months of cold. Too much for me.

I agree with Neo, 4-5 months of the year in Tampa, it is HOT, and humid, too, with little relief overnight, and literally no chance of a cool spell like you sometimes get "up north".
