Florida Family Vacation - Spring Break

Our family of five (three boys 16,14 and 10) is planning a trip to southwest Florida for late March. We're looking for lodging recommendations. $300 or so per night for five nights somewhere between Sarasota and Naples. We hear Sanibel/Captiva is nice. We don't want to expose the boys to too much college rowdiness, they'll get that on their own in 4 to 10 years. And of course, hurricanes have taken their toll on poor Florida and we want to avoid any hard hit areas also. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Try renting a condo. We rented one over Christmas and it was much cheaper than a hotel. I used this service. You deal with all the owners directly.

As long as you stay away from Panama City Beach/Daytona Beach, you shouldn't have much rowdiness in sight. I'd suggest looking at Longboat Key ( http://www.longboatkeychamber.com/ )which is close to Sarasota and very nice.

Thanks dsquared. Friends of mine had mentioned Longboat Key and Siesta Key by Sarasota. I'll check their website.

Thanks to your help we've narrowed our search down to Sanibel or Captiva. Any specific accommodation suggestions for our group?

We rented a condo several years ago at Casa Ybel on Sanibel. This of course was before the hurricane. You may want to look into this property. It had a fabulous pool for children and a day camp for the younger children. Shelling was fabulous! In fact, it was so beautiful there that we witnessed two weddings from our screened porch during our week's stay.

There are apartments and cottages at Tween Waters Inn on Captiva. The boys would love this place. Lots of boating there. There is I think the web site is tweenwaters.com. And I think they've recovered from their brush w/hurricanes but whatever place you decide upon, be sure to ask them point-blank if there is any roof or building construction going on at their property or next to it. Hopefully they will be upfront with you. And get moving because things are already getting tight down here.

We stayed years ago at the Colony Beach resort on Longboat Key. We had two bedrooms with a pullout sofa in townhouse style accomodations. They have tennis, swimming and are right on the beach. The pool was not the greatest, but perhaps that has changed. Otherwise it was a great place for families and the are has lots attractions, make a point to see the Moat Marine Aquarium and if your into culture the Ringling Mansion.
