Florida Everglades
 

Last year while in Miami, we visited the Everglades to the west, doing Shark Valley. This year we will be visiting Miami, driving up from Key West. Is it worth a stop in the Homestead/Florida City area to visit the Everglades, or is it pretty much the same as Shark Valley?

Others may not agree but if you can possibly fit it in I would say definitely YES. From the Homestead entrance you reach the Anhenga Trail. This trail, which is only about a quarter mile long, is a fascinating place to observe the wildlife of the Everglades. It is especially interesting just before sunset. Bring your camera. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I have never been to Shark Valley but have been to the Anhenga Trail twice and would go again if in the area. There are a bizillion alligators you can observe as you walk the boardwalk.

We enjoy photographing at Shark Valley, especially early in the AM before it opens (you can park on the road and walk in early). Then we bike around the access road, which is a nice healthy bike ride.

But I agree with the posters than the Anhinga trail is even better, especially very early and late. And if you have time the drive down to Flamingo and the ponds near the end of the road are also worth a visit.

The areas are different and both worth a visit. The main entrance at Homestead/Florida City has boat rentals and tours thru the 10,000 island area. Also, you may get lucky and see crocodiles.This is the only place I believe in the world where crocos and alligators co-habitate. The other place that is worth a visit is the Biscayne Nat'l Park Visitor Center. There is an current photo exhibit of 50 national parks.
