Floria Keys Travel Questions

We are traveling to the Keys the last week in March and just booked four nights at Wyndam Casa Marina resort in Key West through priceline. Has anyone stayed there?

Also we have two extra nights to spend somewhere else in the Keys. We know we want to visit Bahia Honda state park. Can we do that as a day trip from Key West or should we stay closer to Bahia Honda? Which other Key should we choose? PS - we aren't into fishing.

Any help would be appreciated

If you do a back search of this board you should find lots of information about the Casa Marina, and also some posts about being in Key West during spring break. Reviews of the Casa Marina are generally favorable, with the main disadvantage being its location. Since all the sunset celebrations, and most of the restaurants and tourist activities are on the Gulf, you'll probably want to either rent bikes or mopeds or rely on a shuttle bus. Bahia Honda is only about 35 miles or so from Key West, but with the two lane highway, traveling can be slow. The upper keys are primarily known for R&R and water sports. Islamorada has several nice places to stay, including Cheeca Lodge and the Moorings.

We stayed in Key Largo last June at the Mariott,it is just down the road less than a mile from Bahia Honda. There is not a whole lot to see around there other then that.We really like the hotel and the restraunt at the hotel.Sundowners was next to the hotel and that was really good too.We drove to Key West twice and it takes around two hours to get there. It is an awesome drive though!Key West definitly has more action.

Casa Marina is nice digs. It's at the opposite end of the island from the core of downtown, but that's easily remedied by renting a couple of bikes.

Bahia Honda is, indeed, the jewel of the Keys parks. It's at about Mile Marker (MM) 35 (which means it's about 35 mi. from KW.) You could do it as a day-trip. However, it'd be best to stop there on your way to or from Key West.

One suggestion for the other two nights is Hawk's Cay, about MM66. Very nice.

You can do a search in these forums to get different suggestions and viewpoints. The subject surfaces often.

lenleigh-Bahia Honda is not a mile from Key Largo. Bahia Honda is on the other side of the 7 mile bridge. Perhaps, you are thinking of Pennekamp? I would suggest staying at Hawks Cay, near Marathon.

Yeah your right, that is what i was thinking of.We took a snorkeling trip that left from there going to Bahia Honda.Sorry.

How was the snorkeling out of Pennekamp?

What rate did you get for the Casa Marina thru Priceline? And is it listed as a "resort" rather than a three or four star hotel?

You can do Bahia Honda with Key West as your base, it's about 40 miles. That's what we always do.

Have fun.
Kew West is a wonderful place.

Or you might want to spend a night or two at a rustic, waterfront place I like a lot - Parmers Place on Little Torch Key about 10-15 minutes from Bahia Honda. www.parmersplace.com

We stayed in Key Largo for 10 days last year. Loved it. It is very laid back and a great place to relax. Would also highly recommend Islamorada. You can visit many everglades parks-about an hour (if I remember correctly) drive from Key Largo.
