ozgirl, we have a travel agent (family friend) helping with some of our travel plans, so I'll ask her to check into this for us and report back on what she has to say. I think that contacting the US embassy here in Sydney is a good idea as well. I would think that Australians must do this quite often, so hopefully there is a simple solution.
BuffaloGirl our plan would be to fly to Buffalo and then go to Niagara Falls from there. Can you tell me the easiest way to do that? I read that it's only about a 30 minute trip in which case we can share a couple of cabs. But I'm very pleased that you posted and may be able to help!

There are several options for transport to Niagara... just look up www.buffaloairport.com and have a look at ground transportation... you can also rent a car for your stay and drive it in Canada... as long as you have the proper clearances to cross... and a proper license... as you say, millions of international visitors come to Niagara each year...

Cathies, now that I have had a think about it (without the benefit of last night's red wine!) I don't think there is a problem at all. A couple of years ago we landed in LA (went thru immigration there) flew on to Seattle, toured through Canada and then came back into LA from Vancouver so this is basically the same scenario. I think the only problem would be if it all took more than 3 months which is what we are allowed with the Visa Waiver Scheme.

Cathies, I would call Airport Taxi Service. They have been serving the Buffalo/Niagara airport forever, and they have other options besides a taxi, such as vans and shuttles, etc. I'm sure you can make reservations ahead of time for your group.
http://www.buffaloairporttaxi.com/
If you want more options, just check out the NFTA (Niagara Frontier Transit Authority) website ground transportation page at:
http://www.buffaloairport.com/GroundTransportation.asp
They can all take you to the American and Canadian sides.
It's a straight shoot from the Buffalo airport to Niagara Falls....maybe 20 miles.
Have a wonderful trip!

Buffalogirl, that's fantastic, thanks so much!
gary thanks for your help, but we really don't want to drive.
ozgirl, I hope that was a good Hunter red or perhaps Margaret River?? anyway, thanks for clarifying the visa situation.

Hey cathies, have a great time - we will be there in late June early July and hope to be able to fit Niagara Falls in to our itinerary. Will look out for your trip report!
And no, it was a great McLaren Vale red!

I don't know how much is already set, but when my family went up to Niagra Falls, we felt like the Candadian side not only had a better view, but had a nicer atmosphere and more things to do apart from the falls.... That was a few years ago, though, so things might have changed.
Although we drove, you can take Amtrak for $56 pp (one way) from NY Penn Station to Niagra Falls, ON.
Have Fun!
