Flights in and out of Hawaii & Kauai

I am busily planning a 2-week trip to both the BI and Kauai from the east coast in fall 2012. I keep getting stuck at the same place...we are planning to visit the BI first (will be staying around Volcanoes Nat'l Park).

Can anyone shed some light on (1) what are the best non-stops to the west coast or vacinity from Boston, and (2) what airports to use from there to the islands? It seems logical to use Hilo as it's closest to the national park, but what about Kauai? I see Princeville Airport is near the north coast of Kauai (where we will be staying), but is that the best airport to fly into, or is Lihue the best from the BI? Thanks in advance for your help.

On The Big Island: Kona (KOA) is the major airport where most all the mainland flights arrive.

On The Big Island: Hilo (ITO) receives some mainland flights, but far fewer than KOA.

I chose KOA, as you will want to spend more time on the sunnier, Kona or Kohala side of The Big Island on or near the beaches, and a couple of days in Volcano or Hilo.

On Kauai: Lihue (LIH) is the major airport. Princeville is not large enough for any mainland or commuter flights.

www.hawaiianairlines.com can show you the Hawaii-Kauai flights.

It looks like all the flights stop in Honolulu to get to Kauai. There used to be one direct flight from Kona, I think.

I just got a great deal from San Jose CA [SJC] to Kona on Alaska Air. Great price and they fly non-stop!

We flew non-stop on Alaska Air to Lihue (Kauai) in October - We happened to fly out of Oakland and into San Jose, but on different days, we could have flown to and from the same airport.

It is very reassuring to see that Alaska flies nonstop from San Jose to Hawaii!! Since they do not use floatplanes!

I was referring to the fact that Alaska flies non-stop to KONA. The majority of flights to Hawaiian islands stop in Honolulu first, and then continue on to other islands, thus increasing the time of travel significantly.

Oh, was that supposed funny??

You might try to fly to Hilo which is closer to the Volcano park (20 min). If you care coming from Hono - you might have to go via Maui (possibly you can get a mainland flight into Maui if not direct to BI) - that gives you more scenic air time around Paradise - and going into Hilo along the East Coast of BI lets you see the wonderful mountains on the north end and the pastoral Waipo Valley.

If you do that - suggest you drive over to Kona to fly back to Hono, and/or on to the Garden Isle, our favorite - Kauai.

For Kauai - Lihue is the main airport - and you get the rental car across the steet - and then you can get from there to North Shore in about 45 minutes. Note - if there is rush hour traffic in Kapaa (yes, it can happen) - take the detour around town. See the maps you get with the rental car.

Princeville airport has some inter-island flights - but usually fewer and they are more expensive as I recall.

TM76,
I think the joke is on you. How many non-stop flights a day are there to LIH from the mainland. Can't be many. Now if debit had said non-stop from HNL then your joke would have been a good one.
