flights boston to dc
notice most of the flights are on small planes. comair, am.eagle, etc. etc.
not fussy about airport, bwi, dca or iad will all work. will not use airtran. any opinions? thanks |
DH flies this route a few times/month and shops price and schedule - using something like kayak to research. Price usually runs just above $400, but time of day and day of week can make a huge difference in price on this route. All seem about the same, but American Eagle planes are often a bit smaller than other airlines.

Hi, surprised---and frankly dismayed---to hear. We have not flown to DC in a number of years, but back when we did, you could go on "real" planes. This will be an issue for me if we travel there, b/c I don't travel on small planes.
Just out of curiosity, doesn't UA still fly to IAD on full-sized planes? |
US's shuttle uses A319s.
|
who is US's shuttle?
|
That's USAirways. They run an hourly "shuttle" service BOS-DCA similar to their BOS-LGA and LGA-DCA shuttles.
Flights depart BOS on the hour, from 6am to 8pm. Coming back, flights depart DCA at the bottom of the hour, from 6:30a to 7:30p, and then 9p. On Airbus A319, as EricH says. |
thanks. didn't remember this (US air shuttle) and didn't show up that obviously on the search engines.

Jetblue flies the small jets (100 seats) betwen IAD and Logan.
Your aversion to small planes is really going to limit your options since they dominate the East Coast routes. |
I would agree that avoiding small planes will limit your options.
You're not in the air that long. And, there are lots of advantages to the smaller planes. How about Southwest - Manchester, NH to BWI? Fares are as low as $59 plus a few dollars each way. |
I fly this route a few times a year and am almost always on small planes. I think they're fine, such a short flight that it doesn't really matter. My last flight back a few weeks ago, there were only 8 of us on the flight! Everyone had several rows to themselves.

Samll jets (regional jets or junior jets) usually have more leg room than larger aircraft and are usually not more than two seats abreast.
I dislike turboprops a lot but have never felt that a junior jet was a problem other than having to gate check carryon luggage, and now some aircraft even have room for that. |
We've never had a problem with carryons between Boston and DC, but we fly AirTran (for as little as $656 each way), which has been ruled out for unspecified reasons.
|
Er, that was supposed to be $65 each way!
