JoyT: As you enter the State where you think you will spend the night go into the official Welcome Centre and pick up a book of coupons (usually in racks by the door). These help you save on your hotel room. Also, stay somewhere that offers a free breakfast. We usually take 3 days to drive from east of Toronto, so have 2 nights in hotels.
Affordable places to eat in Bonita: My favourite is the Survey Cafe for breakfast or lunch, Dolly's Produce Patch also breakfast or lunch, South Fork Grill at Coconut Point (their early dining is good value). Iguana Mia on Bonita Beach Road, cheap and cheerful Mexican - go on a Monday if you like Margaritas ($1 each). Be prepared to wait a while as it is very popular - have a margarita while you wait. Go to the beach near Doc's on the Beach to enjoy sunset. You can eat at Doc's, but we take chairs and a cooler with our own drinks and snacks. I'm sure you'll enjoy Bonita, it's a beautiful area with lots to do. Hello back to SusanM. |
If you like lobster, last year we discovered Doug's Seafood in a plaza at the southwest corner of Bonita Beach Road and highway 41. The lobster rolls were delicious....better than the ones I ate on the East Coast.
|
I just had lunch at Doug's. I was in lobster roll heaven.
Thanks for the suggestion Scotia :) |
For future reference, what kind of lobster roll is it - does it have either mayo or celery in it? (I like my lobster rolls unadultered - grilled bun, a little butter, lobster)
|
And what kind of lobster is it? Many places if Florida use those Carribean lobsters, which have little relation (at least by taste) to Northern Atlantic lobsters.
|
These were the North Atlantic lobsters, not Florida lobsters.
Sf7307- Mine was just the way you like them, bun was not grilled though. I think it was even better than the one I had at Mabel's in Kennebunkport. |
yummy, lobster rolls and Margarita's. I am in heaven :)
Will go to Visitor Centres for coupons, thanks for the tips. My husband's name is Doug, his nickname Doc so we will be sure to visit both. Thanks for all your dining & happy hour suggestions. Looking forward to those sunsets and cycling off the great eats. Glad we are in a good spot, thanks for all your advise and suggestions. Note book is filling :) |
I asked about the lobsters. The cashier said they were from either Maine or east coast of Canada. From what I understand you can order the lobster roll any way you want it. There is a fish market next door if you want to buy a whole lobster.
