FL/Ft. Myers Beach or St. Pete Beach?
 

We have March reservations at the Pink Shell in Ft. Myers Beach. We are considering changing our destination. The red algae problem in Ft. Myers has me concerned after reading TAd posts from travellers that have just returned. I called the Pink Shell to inquire about it, but the rep I spoke to said that she was unaware of the red algae problem, but that PS rakes their beach every day.

I just talked to Island Grand Tradewinds Resort in St. Pete, and they have comparable lodging available. Is St. Pete Beach any less desirable than Ft. Myers Beach? The actual resorts look comparable.

I have flights into Tampa. My husband thought we ought to drive further south because it would be warmer, so we decided to drive a couple of hours which is how we ended up making reservations in Ft. Myers to begin with.

My daughter is 14 yrs. old and we are taking her best friend. The trip is really more for them. Although we have chilly weather right now, this isn't a big escape from freezing weather like it is for many more northern travellers. We are going for the lovely beaches. I would really appreciate any thoughts or opinions.

I was just at Ft.Myers beach on Saturday and it was filled to capacity with spring breakers, however, I didn't go out onto the sand.
Of the two beaches I'd much prefer St.Pete to Ft.Myers. I think they keep the beach/sand much cleaner in St.Pete and the restaurants/shops are much nicer. Not the tacky beach places like at Ft.Myers beach. IMO.
It usually is about 10 degrees or so warmer in Ft.Myers.

I have given it enough thought. I have decided to go to St. Pete Beach. I would rather risk lower temps than to risk the red algae mess. It will also be good to avoid the very heavy traffic.

I don't know when you're coming down but the forecast is back up near 80 for the next 10 days. Bring the sunscreen!
