Five guys and the city
The five of us will be travelling to New York in june. Three of us are married ,to are single. Would like to know where can we go to have a good time, have a few drinks, socialize with the locals and not get into any trouble. We will be staying at the Arlington hotel in the flatiron district. Info on any good bars, adult entertainment, would be great. Thanks in advace. All in our mid thirties, and male.

Three of you are married so stay away from adult entertainment. I think there are brothels in New York but don't do it.

Old Town Bar 45 east 18th

You will probably enjoy McSorley's (7th Street btwn 2nd & 3rd). It's a historic pub that brews it's own beer, lots of atmosphere. It tends to get crowded so get there earlyish if you want a table. For some mingling, if the weather is nice, try Luna Park in Union Square Park.

Do you like "dive bars" (like your typical Irish beer pub, or are you looking for something more upscale (where martinis & single-malt scotch reign)?
Myself...I tend to prefer the historic old dive bars. Mclaurie's suggestion of Old Town Bar is a good one. It's in the Flatiron area. It used to be featured in the opening scene of Letterman. It also has the best burgers in NYC, in my opinion. And i heard the men's room is a sight to see there...though personally, I haven't! |
Also DBA on first ave for a huge selection of beers, some cask drawn, and single malt scotches.

The five of us are looking for a place where we can just have a few drinks, and the crowd about are age. Not looking for a dive, but a good place to mingle and get a good feel of true New Yorkers.

Try the W Hotel in Union Square for drinks. It is on 17th & Park and gets a cool mix of people. I also like Corner Bistro in the W. Village for burgers and beers. It is a very neighborhood type place. Old Town Tavern on 18th is also a good suggestion. Mc Sorleys is an experience and a fun way to pass a few(drunken) hours; seems to get a mix of locals and tourists.

Old Town is full of an interesting mix of locals...all different ages. I would expect that a hotel bar would have mainly tourists. "Dive" bars tend to have more locals than the chichi joints because they are not as well-known and the drinks cost half as much!

In the village you have a ton of choices for bars:
XR Bar is a pretty decent local scene. West Houston and Sullivan Madame X - cool, red velvety lounge and good music. Up the street from XR on West Houston Gonzalez y Gonzalez is a cool latin styled place and their claim to fame is that they have the longest bar in the world (can't verify that myself). Broadway and West Houston (has a huge neon sombrero at the entrance) As far as strip joints, Scores on the East Side is the most popular because of the Howard Stern plugs. In Times Square, there is Lace and somewhere near there in Midtown is Private Eyes which I hear is fully unclothed. Haven't been to any of these so don't quote me. |
