Fisherman's Wharf - Accommodation
 

We will be in San Fran - first visit - and have been told to try and get accommodation around Fisherman's Wharf. Has anyone got any suggestions that won't cost us an arm and a leg? We would be wanting private facilities, clean, comfortable, safe and if possible, breakfast included. Price range between $70-$110. Thanks fodorites in advance for your help

Also, your budget is totally unrealistic for what you are asking for.

I and others here would love to help. Please help us help you. What are your priorities?:

What personality do you look for in a neighborhood?
What amenities do you want in the neighborhood you'll be staying?
Cafes? Shopping? Clubs? Diners?
How many in your party?
Are you willing to gamble (i.e. Priceline)?
Do you plan to use public transit(it's excellent)?
When are you travelling (A/C may be not be in the budget)?

The price will vary depending on when you want to stay, but the location is great if you do want to stay in that area. Plus, we booked a special where breakfast was included.

My hunch - just a hunch - is you aren't from the States. Asking for "private facilities" is a tip off - since there are very few accomodations in the States that aren't ensuite.

The Wharf is certainly OK but most of us "SF snobs" would recommend other areas. But staying at the Wharf can be just fine. You'd would be close to the boats to Alcatraz, Pier 39, the Marina section, etc.

You budget is not very realistic for SF anywhere. There are many decent motels on/near Lombard street that you could get for maybe $90-$125. (This isn't the winding bit of Lombard St. you see in every video about SF - but a sort of commercial row area)

For a hotel you would have to raise your budget or use Priceline (Checkout biddingfortravel.com first)

The wharf is a safe area to stay.

Maybe you could look at the Holiday Inn Express there. But I think you should expect to pay more for the room.

I just stayed at www.columbusmotorinn.com It's not fancy, but very clean. Free parking if you will have a car. Walking distance to the Wharf and Coit tower. Breakfast isn't included, but I can recommend Mama's Kitchen. You can walk there, and then on up to Coit Tower.

Yes...try the colombus motor inn and the holiday express.

then go to hotelres.com...which is a sf discount place and see what you can find in the fisherman's wharf and union square area.

We stayed at the Radisson on the Wharf recommended above. We loved the location for reasons also given above. You can walk just across the street and be on Pier 39, take the ferry to Alcatraz, etc. We got it for 80.00 per night on Priceline.

I am staying there next week in that price range through Priceline.

I am staying in that neighborhood because none of the Union Square hotels would accept my price.

It is convenient to the Cable Car and wharves; it is not so convenient to good restaurants, but public transportation in SF is good.

To start, go to www.expedia.com, put in your dates and pick Fisherman's Wharf area. Sort by price. You will be able to find something for $90-110.

Don't make reservations through Expedia, it's not the cheapest. When you know where you want to stay, go to the hotel's website, usually the prices are better there.

We stayed at the Marriott Fisherman's Wharf and were very happy/comfortable with our room and the location.

As the other posters have said, your budget is unrealistic for SF, especially the Fisherman's Wharf area.

SF is an expensive city to stay in.

I can recommend some delicious dim sum in Chinatown at a place called "Youngs." We paid $8 US for dim sum & drinks (canned Coke) and had a filling lunch for 2.

Thanks everyone. This is the first time to SF and we are certainly finding out just how expensive it actually is! We are from downunder OZ so when you tipped that we are not from the States, bingo, you are absolutely correct! Thanks again for your help.

When we stayed at the Wharf, we walked to a grocery store that's nearby and purchased fruit, peanut butter and bagels for breakfast. Other then being cheaper, it got us out and about earlier. :-)

Try the Chancellor Hotel on Union Square. See if hotelres.com has a rate for them.

Most SF'ers recommend this area over the Wharf because it is over-touristed and doesn't reflect San Francisco. As to buying local snacks.....you can do that in the Union Square area as well....we do it all the time. There are many corner stores where you can buy fruit, wine, cheese, etc.
