First visit to Kauai
 

We are thinking of taking our family of 5, kids are 22, 19 and 16 to Kauai for 6 days between Christmas and the day after New Year. Staying at Mariott's Waiohia Beach Club, one of their Vacation Club properties. Does anyone know this property? What is the weather like in late December? Could the island be a little too laid back for our kids? Thanks

We've stayed at the Waiohai (last July) and loved it. The units are really spacious. If you have a choice, though, be sure you face the interior of the horseshoe (the buildings are numbered 1 through 8, with building 4 being the farthest from the water) -- in particular, you do not want to be in the <i>back</i> of Building 4, because the balconies of those units overlook the parking lot. Everything that looks out on the interior is nice -- as the landscaping is gorgeous. If you go to tripadvisor, there are many &quot;Traveler's Photos&quot; that are a good representation of what the property looks like.

That all said, Kauai in general, and the Waiohai in particular, might be too laid back for your kids. Kauai is a laid back island -it's great for beach, and natural scenery, hiking, snorkeling, that kind of thing, but if your kids are looking for nightlife, there isn't any! They could take surfing lessons though, next door at Kiahuna.

We usually go from Dec 30ish and stay 2, 3 weeks and really haven't had too much of a weather related problem but in the winter there are no guarantees.

There should be plenty to do for those aged &quot;kids&quot;.

ATVs right near your area. Golf. Hiking. Tubing. Kayaking. Surfing and parasurfing. Good beaches in the Poipu area.
But, if they are looking for a &quot;WOOOO HOOOO PARTYYYYYYY&quot; nightlife, go to Maui.

One of our &quot;local&quot; friends goes to the Waiohai for a &quot;vacation&quot; during the year.

Haven't stayed at the Marriott but LOVE the island. Lots to do as Kal stated...hiking, surfing, snorkeling, beaches and lots of beautiful scenery.

We have stayed at the Waiohai several times and loved it every time. I think our boys were 17 and 21 the last time we were there. We found plenty to do. We did the Kipu Ranch ATV tour which was great and the men all went Snuba diving. We snorkeled in front of the hotel every day. Better book quick as that is going to be prime time. Have fun!

Regarding our weather:

Either this past holiday season or the year before (can't remember) it rained straight through. Usually, however, rains come earlier, either in November or early December.

We have stayed in Poipu from Nov to Jan the last 4 years and yes, last December WAS rainier but mainly during first 1/2 of the month. We still had lots of beach and sun time however. (My son-in-law snorkled beside a big turtle in front of Waiohai! ) Weather there is better than east and north shore in the winter. Previous year Nov and December were very hot with lots of sun!
