First Visit in NYC w/4 year old

Hi all. My husband & I are going to NYC for the first time and we're taking our 4 year old son. Any advice on do's & don'ts? What about a carrying a stroller around for him? Will it be too much of a hassle? Also, what size tote/purse should I carry if at all? I'd normally carry a very small purse but I'm concerned that I'll need an extra change of clothes, wipes, meds, etc. I don't want to over do it but I also want to be prepared for whatever. Thank you all so much!

A lightweight umbrella stroller is a good idea. Kids' biggest problem in NYC is the walking.

You might consider taking a tote bag-put your small purse in it along with other things you might need.

Don't try to do too much. Allow for running around-blowing off steam time in one of the parks.

Eat earlier or later than most do so you can go to any restaurant you want. Keep snacks is your bag. Have fun! Gocitykids.com is a good website. Nycvisit.com has a calendar of events that might be helpful too.

The Museum of the City of New York has a great toy exhibit, if you think he'd be interested. Also, the model boat pond in Central Park is fun on a nice day.

There's a small zoo in Central Park - including a kid's zoo.

Most kids love the Museum of Natural History - the dinos and whale if nothing else.

When my brother was about that age he loved the arms & armor section of the Met - as well as the Egyptian department (he always wanted to look inside the sarcophagi for mummies)

Take at least one boat ride - either Staten Island ferry (free ad with views of the harbor ad SOL in the distance) or one of the Circle line tours

If you take a stroller (and you should - many places have LONG lines and most kids that age are;t used to walking distances) make sure it folds - so you can take it on bus, get it up and down subway stairs - and easily put in the back of a cab

I would stay on the upper west side - to give good access to the Park and the Nat History Museum. That area is mid/upscale residential - so has lots of good, inexpensive restaurants - easy esp if you eat early - at 6/7 or so.

That area also has a large Barnes & Noble (B'way & 82?) with kids activities he may enjoy

Also - just before you go check out the web site of the local news channel (NY1 News) which always lists special programs for children
