First Trip Questions

Dear All,

About to book 2 tix JFK to HNL on miles for my wife and I. Very excited about exploring as much as we can. We'll only have 7 days. Although I'll have several follow up questions, my questions at this point are:

1) Is it worth it to stay on Oahu for our entire time? We can afford to take a trip and I've heard great things about Maui and Kona...

2) Does anyone on this board have experience with staying at the Aqua hotels in Waikiki?

Thanks in advance!

Not sure if your 7 days included the travel time, which will eat a day in each direction.

No matter, with that little time, spend the whole trip on Oahu.

You can revisit and see other islands on next trip <grin>

The feeling here on Fodors that 5 days per island is minimum.

We did 5 on Oahu, 5 on Maui and only 3 on Big Island. We would have loved to have way more time on BI. The 5 days on Maui was okay, but not enough on Oahu.

With only one week, I also would suggest staying on Oahu. Perhaps split the week (if you like) between Waikiki and the North Shore.

It's not about money, it's about time (as far as trying to inlude Maui or Big Island).

Having traveled from the east coast to HI 7 times, I usually recommend that the trip be no less than 10 days. Any less is just not enough time to get acclimated to the time change and enjoy your time fully. Oahu is pretty built up at this point and therefore not one of my favorite islands. If you can swing it, how about 3 days on Oahu and 4-7 on one of the other islands?

There is more to see & do on Oahu than any other island. Spend the entire time there.

Lots of info:

Save your money on hotel/motel accomodations. They are not that important since you will only be sleeping there.

We flew from Kansas City to Oahu and it took the better part of a day. When we flew back, they routed us to Chicago and back to Kansas City. That took even longer. So that leaves you just five days.

Spend all of them on Oahu. There are a lot of things to see and do there. We were there for five days and didn't even get to the North Shore.

But the best thing for a budget-conscious couple is to save money on the room and spend it elsewhere.
