First time visitor to Outer Banks
 

Hi, first time visitor to Outer Banks. We are considering a rental home. One that we like is in Buxton. How would you describe that area? Is it a long drive to restaurants, other attractions? Is it mainly a residential area.? Which area would you describe as the tourist "hub" there? Thanks for the advice.

If you do a google search on "outer banks", you will find enough web sites to last a lifetime. I'm certain many of your general questions will be answered.

We go to the northern end of the Outer Banks. I understand that Buxton is a small village and very quiet. Do a search for Buxton on this board and you will at least get some idea about the area.
Oh, and I guess the area from Kill Devils Hills to Nags Head would be considered the tourist hub of the Outer Banks.

Only been once, to Ocracoke and Hatteras. Ocracoke was my absolute fave. Very low-key and charming. Maybe you're looking for something more exciting? I liked Ocracoke because it's not built up.

ruff--we stayed in a motel in Buxton 4 years ago mid-June. It's a tourist area, but low-key. I remember there were a good number of restaurants within a 15 minute drive, and one right across the street from where we stayed on the main highway. The beach was lovely--not at all crowded. Our favorite time on the beach was right before or after a storm when the waves and sky were spectacular. But I did love Ocracoke the best--if going back, I'd stay there. But Buxton is a a lot quieter than Nags Head area.

What are you looking for? Kitty Hawk and Nags Head would be considered the "hub" to some people. It's a little more "honky tonk" than the northern towns. The houses are older but and it's more centrally located to everything. The northern towns of Duck and Corolla are a little more upscale, with newer houses and lots of cute shops and restaurants. I have never been to Buxton but I believe it's more secluded than the rest of the Outer Banks. I've been to Duck many times and that's where my family prefers.
