You need to take all the suggestions with a grain of salt. For instance the suggestion to avoid IH 35 like the plague. IH 35 is the most direct route and you only have 4 days. I agree with taking the back roads on the way down, and avoid rush hour going back to Austin.

Has anyone stayed at the Hotel Havana?

Read the reviews on TripAdvisor...sounds like a nice hotel.

I hope I'm not too late to help. I stayed in San Antonio at the Valencia Hotel. It was wonderful and has a downstairs exit direct to the river walk. If you go at night, be sure to take a flashlight. It is very dark along the river and you don't want to fall in! If you get lost or disoriented while walking the river, climb back up to street level. With a local map you'll be able to quickly find your way back "home". I was a 68 year old female traveling by myself when I went 2 years ago and I had no problems and felt very safe, even at night.
