First time to NYC! Advice please
Hi there..
I came across this fab site when I was googling New york! We have finally booked our girly trip away for 6 nights in November staying Midtown east. I know a few things we want to do but would really like some help on suggestions and things that people would recommend! On our hit list are... Statue of Liberty Crown Tour(Not on sale yet for November but I keep checking everyday!) Empire State Building Top of the rock Sex and the City Tour Maybe see Wicked or something similar Central park Ice skating Not sure how to plan days and what to in what order as well. Where would be good for cocktails and a good night out and general help!! I am from the UK and we have Groupon which is brill do you get good deals come for NY? Thanks a million! |
I heard the Statue is closing again. Here is an article from last year, but you might want to do more internet research on it. I don't have time at the moment
http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/l...Ya2bt7oa9QlnAI You can google Central Park Ice Skating or Wollman Rink to get more info on that |
For me the best thing to do in NYC is to walk around its various neighborhoods. Some of my favorites are Greenwich Village, East Village, SoHo, Little Italy, and Chinatown.
It's also fun to walk over the Brooklyn Bridge and to explore Brooklyn Heights (or to take the subway to Brooklyn Heights and walk back to Manhattan over the Brooklyn Bridge). HTTY |
vjpblovesitaly thank you for the info! Would have been wondering why I could not buy! I can buy the reserve ones to get on the island. Gutted as was really looking forward to that! do you think it is worth booking the tickets now for the ferry? was thinking 9am to beat the queues!
happytrailstoyou thank you sounds like an excellent idea will have to have a look at each one!! So much to do in so little time!! |
One of our favorite things is the food tour of Greenwich Village. It's really fun, and you get to walk through the beautiful neighborhood sampling all kinds of foods.

If you use go select.com you can consolidate your tours and save money! Don't forget Central Park and Bergdorf's. Have fun!

Don't do both ESB and Top of the Rock - too repetitive andyou really have nit much time for all there is to see/do. SB can have lines hours long - and views from TOTR are better IMHO - so do that instead.
Unfortunately Nov will be too cold for the outdoor cafes - which are one of the joys of casual meals and people watching - we have hundreds mostly in the residential areas. Pick out a couple of museums and then check to the departments to see what you really want to see. The Costume Institute at the Met is always a big hit - as are the impressionists. Other than that we have many dozens of museums from the Asia Society to the Museum of Sex. Don;t miss Grand Central Station - which is gorgeous. And visit the Campbell Apartment there for great drinks and fun views (since the roof top bars will likely all be closed). |
Looks like Lady Liberty will be closed starting November 1, 2011 for 9 months. Liberty Island will still be open. http://www.nps.gov/stli/index.htm

Isn't November too early for ice skating in Central Park?

http://www.foodsofny.com/greenwichvillage.php is the link to the food tours we like.
|
I took the same tour and LOVED it.
|
Thankss for the tour link looks lush! Will show my friend.
On the website it says November for iceskating but I saw that Rockfellar opens in October. In terms of choosing between ESB and TOR is it worth doing one at day and one at night? Thanks for all the tips and shame Statue of Liberty closes a week before we go! |

I went to NYC for the first time 2 years ago. Here is a link to my trip report: http://www.fodors.com/community/unit...-big-apple.cfm You may find some helpful info for your trip. Eventhough we went into the SOL museum and took a look around, I found Ellis Island much more interesting. Perhaps because 3 of my 4 grandparents came thru EI in the early 1900's. You may not be as interested. We just did TOR, but met a couple who went to ESB at midnight/1 am, ? , very late and said there were no lines. I hope you have a great trip and please report back!! We did both, and I really like Top of the Rock better. It's nice to be able to look at the Empire State Building, and TOR gives you that view.
