first time to Chicago
My fiance and I are going to Chicago for the first time the August 8-10. We are seeing a White Sox/Red Sox game. Does anyone have any advise on which airport to fly into, where to stay and what to see. I realize it's a short stay and so much to see.

Book now as a lot of hotels are booked. I am going there for the same reason (only 1 Sox game, also going to the Cubs game on Saturday)
Here is my thread for this trip. Hope it helps. http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=35092252 |
It's easy to reach the central city from either airport, so look for flights based on price and schedule.
The only thing is that there is lots of construction on the rail lines this summer. The result is that on some weekends service is suspended in some areas and replaced by shuttle buses or trains are rerouted. On the Wed or Thur before you leave, check the CTA site www.transitchicago.com for current news that may affect you. |
In case you have never gone to see the Sox on the road, it is hectic. Everything will be busier than normal and packed with Sox fans. Given that it is the Cardinals and Sox in there that weekend, places will be mobbed with people wearing Red.

We really enjoyed the boat tour of local architecture. http://www.chicagoline.com/archcruise/

I was confused there for a moment. Just to clarify, in case anyone else is too: He's talking about the Red Sox (around here, "Sox" means the White Sox). And it's the Cubs who are playing the Cardinals, of course. |
Oh and BTW, expect to see plenty of Cubby blue around town too, Jake!

We also just went for our first time to Chicago in May 2008. I also agree, the Architectural Boat Tour was great. It gives you a view of the whole city and alot of history too. Try the new restaurant 'ZED 451' and the traditional Italian Restaurant that is very famous 'Gene and Georgetta's'. They are fabulous.!!

CAPH52, I was definitely referring to the Red Sox. Sorry about that. Not used to having to differentiate between the 2.
|
Well, in Chicago, buster, it's not a question of "differentiating"!!!! It is White Sox or just Sox all the way! You are "Boston" in my baseball circles.
|
Apology accepted, tchoinoire. But I have to admit that I was, at least in part, reacting to a bit of irritation at the implication that the town will be over run with out of town fans. I'm not sure you understand just how much of a baseball town Chicago is. I'm used to watching Cubs games all over the country and seeing lots of Cubs fans in the stands. The idea that we wouldn't be in the majority here in Chicago rankles a bit. Yes, there will be Cardinals fans at Wrigley. But you better believe Cubs fans will be very well represented. I hope, for your sake and mine, that you're treated to the crowd's rendition of "Go Cubs Go" after the game!
|
All I said is that there will be a lot of Red. I definitely was not trying to be disrespectful as I know Chicago is a great baseball city. That being said, I will definitely be cheering for the Cubs when I go the game on Saturday afternoon. Will probably buy a Cubs hat. Of course, to get my moneys worth with how much we paid for tickets, it needs to be 20 innings...
|
When the Red Sox played at AT&T last summer, our section (which is otherwise all season ticket holders) was FILLED with Red Sox fans. Same thing when the Cubs played here this year - FILLED with Cubs fans. That's what happens when you live somewhere where everyone is from somewhere else! Embarrassing :)

Glad to hear it! :) |
dmlove, I would say that's what happens when a popular team, whose fans follow it on the road, plays anywhere. If there is one thing I have noticed about attending baseball games ANYwhere these days, it's how hard it is to find a ticket at face value! Scalpers seem to be everywhere.
