You could begin in Tucson where you can visit the Desert Museum, Sabino Canyon, Mission San Xavier del Bac, and take day trips to Tombstone (of old west fame) and Bisbee, which is a very charming town where you can take a tour of a copper mine. Another day trip from Tucson is Nogales, Mexico although you may receive negative comments about doing so from many other posters. After Tucson you can head to Phoenix and Sedona. On the way to Sedona you can stop in a very quaint town named Jerome.

marilee,
is there enough to do in sedona to spend a week there? how long does it take to travel from tucson to sedona? i am from nyc and have never been to the southwest and i have heard it is beautiful and want to see it for myself (that is why i would like to visit..ok ???)

The drive from Tucson to Sedona is approximately 4 hours. I forgot to mention that from Sedona you can continue on to the Grand Canyon, which will take about 3 hours. I don't think you need to spend 1 week in Sedona. A couple of days is all you will need to explore. You can take a jeep tour of the red rock country, dine in some nice restaurants, and just enjoy the incredibly beautiful scenery.

You're skipping Phx/Scottsdale. A few days there might be nice, especially if you like golf or shopping. Then spend a day or two in Sedona. It depends on how much driving and switching hotels you want to do-you may want to pick a home base and relax more. What time of year are you coming?

Skipping Phoenix is a good thing, IMHO

Ditto Kameha. Skip Phoenix, unless your idea of vacation is either golfing or staying at an over priced "spa".
Tucson and vicinity or GC and the 4 corners area get my vote.
