Last Halloween my Aussie cousins (in their 40's, no kids) were here visiting. We sent them to the local pumpkin patch to pick out some pumpkins, and then the 4 of us did some pumpkin carving! They were apprehensive at first, didn't quite get the idea, but really had a fantastic time when they began to see the result of all the carving. We lit up the pumpkins on the porch and they took hundreds of photos!
S0 - whether you are in or near Yosemite or Las Vegas, I recommend you try some pumpkin carving, maybe find some locals who might guide you in the process.
In California, Halloween is a pretty big deal with adults these days. Also, it coincides with Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), so you might want to do a little research on that before you come.

I would imagine there will be all kinds of wild halloween parties in Vegas, especially since Halloween itself is on a Saturday night.

The two very largest places the OP might even conceivably be that night (other than if they get to LV a day early) are Bishop pop. approx 3000 and Lee Vining pop. approx 400 -- the rest of their route is basically empty of towns/villages/wide spots in the road. . . . . It is beautiful but totally empty country. So IF they want any sort of Halloween festivities - it will be either the low key in Yosemite Valley - or the crazy/wild in Las Vegas.

Them's the choices . . . . .

volcanogirl - your Aussie neighbors sound like us. We have dozens of spiders in our decorations -- and we move/pose them every night. Sometimes surging across the road (the neighbors know to slow down), attacking scarecrows and each other, sometimes attacking the neighbors' houses, poised on the mailbox to get the mailman (he says he looks forward to it) -- you get the idea. Neighbors walk by, people drive by -- it's a great time to meet your neighbors, and I love it.

slu, how fun! Our neighborhood goes nuts for Halloween; the first year we lived here I bought 5 bags of candy and ran out by 7:00, and my husband had to hurry out to get more. We literally give out nearly 20 bags of candy every year. We only give 2 pieces per kid, and it still takes that many bags. My husband lines up the bags with his favorites at the end; he always hopes that the Reese's are left!

You may see some adults dressing up on that day but it'll be few and far between.

Wife & I arrived in New Orleans one weekend, turns out it was Halloween. There were some "interesting" costumes worn on Bourbon Street
