Holy crap! Those pictures are crazy. That's a shame bc HWY 1 is such a nice drive, even if it does take a while.

That is very scary. There have been some big fires in Big Sur in recent years, but this is the first one in awhile that is right at Hwy 1. And, it is January. We're supposed to be worried about mud slides and washouts this time of year, not wildfire.

Big Sur Kate is reporting 4% contained, news on TV yesterday here in LA had it at 35%, so sounds like some progress.

The L.A. Times reported today that the fire isn't as large as first feared. Originally, officials estimated it had grown to 1500 acres by Saturday morning, but after some real-time mapping it was determined by Monday morning that it had burned about 700 acres. Winds have subsided, and an increase in humidity is forecast. This afternoon (Tuesday), the AP reports that the fire is 45% contained. Highway 1 is still closed with no opening date announced.
