Fire Island: Long weekend trip questions.

I'm trying to plan a "beachy" trip this summer for a long weekend and Fire Island was suggested as a great place to go to by multiple friends of mine. The number of people going isn't set yet - I haven't actually even sent out the idea to my friends thus far - I wanted to get more details first. With that said, the group size could range anywhere between 10 to 25 people. Are there house rentals in Fire Island that can easily accommodate that amount of people? If so, what is the price range like? I heard that it's cheaper than similar house rentals that I'd find in, say, the Hamptons.

The group of people going are all between the ages of 24-29 years old. What kind of activities/night life is there on Fire Island? Is it walking distance from the beach? And is there one particular area to look to stay in? I've never been to Fire Island so I'm completely clueless as to what it offers and what the whole place is like. We'll all be traveling from Manhattan, Westchester County or North New Jersey and most of us have vehicles accessible.

Any information at all would be appreciated!

During the season, I am not sure if you can rent a house for just a weekend.
We rented for years but for the season.
There are communities with huge houses. Not cheap.
I think everything is cheaper than the Hamptons lol but
you might also want to look into Montauk .. (my favorite

I was afraid of that (renting for the whole season vs. one weekend). I'm assuming that option is more abundant in Montauk? Do you have any ideas of what websites I could go to that are reliable when looking at summer house rentals off/on Long Island? I sound so helpless right now... Haha. Thank you for your quick response!

http://www.montauk-online.com/

See if this is any help.
For a weekend, there are hotels in Montauk right on the Ocean. You could all take rooms for 2, as many as you needed, if you book far enough in advance.
Or there are places to stay near the Marina, just browse the internet and the website and see what looks good to you.
Look at a hotel called Ditch Plains Motel, I think.
Our house was around there .. it is a hotel surfers like, right on the beach .. great location. I am getting homesick

Don;t know anyplace that rents houses for a weekend. Most larger houses rent only for the whole summer - or a month at least. there are smaller places that many rent by the week - but they are typically fully rented by April or so.

And many houses won't rent (or towns don;t allow) rentals to groups of young people.

As for beach - Fire Island is a beach - nothing else. You would need to look at the various towns - which have very different atmospheres - some families, some singles, some gay.

I think finding anything for a weekend will be your major challenge - but perhaps the economy is bad enough that some owners will offer this. If you are serious you should be looking for options now.

As for staying in Montauk - it's possible to get there via Jitney - but you are extremely limited in where you can go/eat etc without cars. there is no reasonable local public transit.
