Fingerlakes in March
 

My husband's birthday is coming up in March and I see there is a Pasta & Wine Tour happening on the Seneca Lake Wine Trail. I realize summer and fall are the best times to hit the fingerlakes but do you think this event in March would still be worthwhile?

If you do a search for "Finger Lakes" (two words) you will find a wealth of information as this topic has been discussed many times before.

Actually, I read all of them prior to posting. Unfortunately everybody talks about their summer or fall trip - hence my March question. Thank you for calling my typo to my attention. I need to re-post using the right spelling!

It could be very cold up there in March.

It's supposd to be 52 degrees on March 1 and 2--but that is unusual! We have had a nice couple weeks (sunny and 30s), but we could get more snow in March.

I say come anyway--Seneca Lake still looks beautiful and there are many nice wineries, restaurants, etc.

March is about the ugliest time in upstate New York. The beautiful glistening snow has turned to a rainbow of greys, black and browns, there's lots of mud, nothing is starting to turn green or sprout yet, and it's the height of pot hole season. The event might be fun (and is probably done just to get people there during the slow season), but don't go for the weather or scenery.

I just drove Rt 14 along Seneca Lake earlier this week. Lake is open (not frozen) and beautiful. I didn't stop, but it looked like most of the wineries were open. In March you should find accomodations at top of the line (like Geneva on the Lake) or very nice (Bellhurst Castle or Glenora Wineries) very reasonable.

It appears that this event is March 13-14. Our weather in March can be ANYTHING. We have had some our absolute worst storms in March. Or, you could get lucky and hit a nice spring-like weekend. Personally, if there were one month of the year that I could clear out of upstate New York it would be March. (It really is pretty ugly around here at the moment.) The advantage will be there will be no crowds. The event sounds fun. As long as you decide to not worry about the weather you will likely have a good time. Happy birthday!
