Finger Lakes Trip Report
I just returned from a solo road trip to the Finger Lakes. I did a lot of research and had a packet of information for each area I visited. The trip to that area from my home in New Jersey is about 5 ½ hours which is about the length of time I like to spend on the road per day.
Accommodations: I tried to spend not more than $150 per night so that eliminated staying in First Class hotels or resorts.
Ithaca: 2 nights at the Hampton Inn. Very comfortable room.
Geneva: 2 nights at the Hampton Inn. Not quite up to par. Small room and could hear tv & talking through the walls.
Watkins Glen: I was scheduled to stay 2 nights at the Golden Knight in Rock Stream, but because of the conditions there I left after one night. I had prepaid $169 for 1st night and $149 for second.
Corning: Last night at the Radisson. Very nice hotel and only $125.
Historical sites:
Seward House; Auburn. Home of William Seward who served in many political offices. He was Secretary of State under Lincoln and was severely injured in an assassination attempt at the same time of Lincoln’s. The tour and house were one of my favorites on this trip.
Willard Memorial Chapel: Auburn. Tiffany designed every part of this chapel.
Sodus Point Lighthouse: On Lake Ontario
Sampson Military Museum: On grounds of Sampson State Park. Was a military center for Navy during WWII and Air Force during Korean War.
Women’s Rights National Historical Park; Who knew that the Women’s Rights started in 1850 in Seneca Falls? I didn’t before visiting this interesting site.
Joseph Smith Farm; Just drove past and took a photo of where the founder of the Mormon Church lived.
Waterfalls:
There are lots of waterfalls in the area, but because of my limited ability to hike or walk long distances I couldn’t see most of them. But, I did get nice views of Buttermilk Falls, Taughannock Falls, Hector Falls and She-Oua-Ga Falls….very beautiful!
Museums and Other Places of Interest:
Cornell Lab of Ornithology: Interesting but I expected more.
Cornell University Campus: Never expected it to be so hilly and tree filled.
Auburn: Beautiful town filled with spectacular big old houses.
Murando Cheese: Dairy Farm that makes its own cheese. Tasted many kinds and bought quite a few.
Meyers Distillery: They raise their own grains for the whiskey and vodka they make. Bought a bottle of Bourbon.
Corning Museum of Glass: Unbelievable place. Large collection. Infact I saw just a fraction of it in 2 ½ hours. Best section was the new Contemporary Art Section. I had no idea that glass could be such a wonderful art form.
Rockwell Museum: Small Native American and Western Art museum
Drives: I enjoy getting off the main roads and seeing the countryside. Lovely Farms and Apple Orchards.
Food: I didn’t take the time to search out good restaurants and most of the places where I ate were pretty bad. Two restaurants were good.
Ginny Lee at Wagner Winery: Good Turkey/Asiago Sandwich on lovely deck with lake view.
Radisson Hotel : Perfectly cooked Filet Mignon.

Next time, try a B&B in Canandaigua instead of Watkins Glen.

I loved this trip and if I ever go again I would try to stay in better accommodations (although I'm not a B&B fan). Schmeri, Glad that Murando Cheese is on your list.
There is so much more to see in the area, that I may just schedule another trip.
