Finger lakes Restaurants and Wineries?
We will be heading to Seneca Lake next week- our first trip here. Looking for some recommendations on restaurants, wineries (we enjoy Chardonnay and Cab's)- We plan to do some hiking, golfing and touring all the lake areas to enjoy the charming towns- any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!! Susan

IMO, best wineries are: Lamoreaux Landing and Red Newt on the eastern side of Seneca Lake, Fox Run and Hermann J. Wiemer on the western side of Seneca Lake and Dr. Frank on Keuka. Dr. Frank has the best wines in the Finger Lakes. (Try to get a tasting with George.) For a fun tasting experience (but so-so wines), check out Hazlitt. Also, for a different type of tasting (sitting down at tables with different types of nibbles for each wine tasted) try MacGregor. Good restaurants for dinner: Cafe at Red Newt, Veraisons at Glenora, Belhurst Castle, and the fine dining room at Esperanza mansion. For lunch, consider the restaurants/cafes at Wagner, Fox Run and Heron Hill wineries.

I have posted a lot of info on Seneca Lake (my favorite of all, just in case my screen name doesn't give me away!), so click on my screen name for more suggestions than what I have below.
The following are my favorites (remember, most wineries close at 5pm):
East Side:
-Lamoreax Landing
-Wagner (also brewery!)
-Silver Thead (all dry wines)
-Shalestone (red is all they do, must stop)
-Standing Stone
-Champagne House (just because it is so much fun to taste sparkling wines)
-Red Newt
-Bloomer Creek
West Side:
-Lakewood
-Prejean
-Belhurst (haven't been yet, however they have a new wine maker from Europe who has gotten a lot of publicity in our local wine trail papers, brand new facility)
Hiking -- the Glen/Gorge at the state park -- must do!
Water -- the Malibar X sail boat takes off from the pier (look for Captain Bills/Seneca Harbor Station at the base of the lake on Franklin St).
Burdett -- town north of Watkins, on 79. Great little breakfast/lunch place called the Gris Mill Cafe. Really good.
Watkins -- the Grapevine has really good sandwhiches. The Glen Mountain Market has good breakfast sandwhiches and lunch. Good for coffee.
Dinner -- East side of Seneca - Red Newt winery or the Stonecat (attached with Bloomer Creek winery. Looks sketchy from the outside, really good on the inside! Also, Seneca Harbor Station has good food too.
Charming towns -- Hammondsport on Keuka lake -- the Village Tavern is a nice place for dinner. If do get over to that lake, don't miss Dr. Frank's winery. One of the best in the area.
Ithaca is on Cayuga Lake -- fun to walk around the Commons, lots of great state parks there: Treman, Buttermilk, Taughannock. Nice waterfalls at all of them.
Let me know if you have specific questions, and have a BLAST!!! SG
