finger lake region and niagara falls
 

We will be taking a drive to niagara falls and were looking to stay somewhere on the way back that is relaxing and possibly on a lake. Kids wouldn't mind doing cooperstown on way back either. Any recommendations?

Any other ideas of things to see or do would be appreciated.

lisa, on the way back to where? it would help to know where you plan driving.

There have been many posts lately on the Finger Lakes area (especially Seneca Lake). Check those out for recommendations. Also, Cooperstown is not near the Finger Lakes. Do you have a budget for hotels? How many nights?

The Finger Lakes has lots of great ways to spend the day -- hiking, swimming, wineries, boating, you name it.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that we are returning to the Hudson Valley area from Niagara Falls.

Just make sure you're going to Niagara Falls, Ontario (Canada). Niagara Falls, NY is an awful dirty dingy crime-ridden place. Niagara On The Lake (about 15 miles from Niagara Falls) may be one of the prettiest towns you ever set foot in.

If you are talking about Niagara on the lake, we are planning on going there and then back toward home and trying to fit in cooperstown for my boys. I know it is a little off the track, but I've been told it is worth the trip.

I'm posting a link here, lisa64, to the NY State Parks in the "Finger Lakes Region". We stayed as a camping family, in the Butternut Valley in the hills above Oneanta, before traveling on to Cooperstown. Many Cabin accomodations Hope this helps.

True, Niagara Falls, NY is light years behind NF, Ont in terms of development. But, if you don't stop on the US side along the way, you'll miss out on spectacular views of the falls. Plus, the Cave of the Winds tour is fantastic - it takes you down to the base of the Bridal Falls - you can reach out and touch the spray!

thanks for the info everyone. I'll look into all that was suggested. By the way, Kcapuani, where are you from? We didn't think there were any other capuani's other than our family here in US. Most are in Italy!

That is amazing - we very well could be related somehow! Capuani is my maiden name - my father's parents came to the US from a small town outside of Rome and settled in Lackawanna, NY (a few miles south of Buffalo). They have long since passed away, and the only remaining Capuani's that I know are my aunt and uncle. We all still live in the Buffalo suburbs.
