Finding Grimaldi's Restaurant
 

We want to take the subway to Brooklyn, have lunch at Grimaldi's and walk the bridge back. Can someone tell me how to find Grimaldi's once we get off the subway at High Street? I've read a few posts tht say it is hard to find Grimaldi's (???).

Walk down the hill but don't cross under the bridge... look for the line.

Other option, ask anyone walking nearby where it is and point you in the right direction.

We didn't find it hard to find. Let the bridge be your guide and follow it down towards the water. Stay on the south side of the bridge (left as you head towards the water). The address is 19 Old Fulton St., 718-858-4300. It's a block from the water. Walk down to the water and try the ice cream at the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory - delicious!!

After you eat walk back up Old Fulton to the first intersection after Grimaldi's (I believe). Turn left and walk under the bridge. Once you're under the bridge you cross the street, I believe there was a signal for this. Once you're on the other side of the street you will see the entrance for the stairs to get you to the pedestrian crossing for the bridge.

We did this using the Brooklyn loop of the Gray Line tour bus. Caught the Brooklyn tour bus at Battery Park. It took us over the Manhattan Bridge into Brooklyn a little ways and then we got off at the waterfront and walked over to Grimaldi's. We ate lunch, then had ice cream and then walked the bridge. Great fun, great food and great views! Enjoy yourself!

A great way to get to or from Grimaldi's from Manhattan is the water taxi. It arrives/departs just south of the South Street Seaport and lands one block away from Grimaldi's (next to the ice cream factory). The cost is only $4, and it's fast. I'd suggest the water taxi over the subway.

Wouldn't staying on the South side of the bridge put the bridge on your right side as you walk towards the water?

Yes, Bo is correct. How did I miss that one? If you're walking west towards the East River, the Brooklyn Bridge should loom large on your right side. Look for the ubiquitous line outside Grimaldi's, on the right side of Old Fulton Street.

Yes, the bridge will be on the right, you will be to the left of it. That's what I intended to convey. Thanks for pointing out that it was unclear.

I'll be in NY in a couple of weeks. Just curious to know why you want to go to Grimaldi's?

Grimaldis is arguably the best Pizza in NYC.

While you're in DUMBO - that's the neighboorhood (Down Umder Manhattan Bridge Overpass), check out Jaques Torres for great chocolate. They're at 66 Water Street. Just ask at Grimaldis and they'll point you in the right direction.

There's a great art and performance scnene happening in Dumbo. Arts at St. Ann's Warehouse is just one of many. You can see what thay're showing at http://www.artsatstanns.org.

Dumbo is the closest thing we have in NYC to the old Soho. Soho today, is nothing more than a mall.

Thanks so much for your responses. I'm going to check out the water taxi to get to Brooklyn - great idea. Is that the same as the Beast that goes really fast ?

No...the Beast is a speedboat "ride" in the NY Harbor. The water taxi is a small, speedy, yellow ferryboat.

To clear up one more point, Grimaldi's is not in DUMBO. It's "under" the Brooklyn Bridge, not the Manhattan Bridge. DUMBO is north of Grimaldi's.

Actually, it IS in DUMBO. Old Fulton Street is generally considered the southern border of DUMBO. And I just passed by there last night...they have a sign that says DUMBO on their front door. Unfortunately they also had a sign that said "no takeout" in the window. :( Kinda ruined my night! There are so many tourists down there that we locals are getting screwed. There were 50 people in line for ice cream too... >:o
