At least on the Big Island you can run over the coqui frogs...don't think it's politically correct to run over a chicken/rooster.

Don't know why you continue going back to that place called Kauai. They don't have an active volcano, an observatory on the highest island mountain in the world (look it up!), coquis or one of the best coral formations in the islands.

Our traffic jams are mild in comparison to Kauai's. If you get behind a pick-up truck hauling papayas, that's a traffic jam on the Big Island. And yes we have stop lights (well 1 in Pahoa and we had a blessing when it was turned on), steam vents for a natural sauna, nude beaches (that's for Kal) and not that many chickens.

Yes, the first Indy Jones movie was filmed on Kauai but the latest was filmed here (the ant scene)and parts of Lost were filmed here.

So what's the fricking draw of Kauai? I went there 4-5 times and fell asleep. I'll try and make it to a GTG, but seriously, you should bypass that HELLHOLE and come to a real island, The Big Island!

So are the steam vents, mat!

Yeah! Friends don't let friends do Kauai!

The new Ben Stlller Jack Black movie, Tropic Thunder, was filmed on Kauai and a portion was filmed next door to The Islander.

I always stayed at the Beachboy. The Islander was $5.00 more.

Kal Jun 2nd, 2008 08:35 PM

The other one on the other side of The Islander where they filmed was $5 less than the Beachboy.;)

Roger Dodger!

Hanalei, where are you staying? You always end up getting a decent Marriot priceline rate and I bid and bid and bid and never get one!!

Hanalei Jul 23rd, 2008 03:16 PM

Hi Iceeu2,

We recently got a timeshare in Princeville. Let's just hope we can afford tickets for 4 next year. So we will be in Princeville for a week and move on to the Marriott for a few nights.

I bidded and stayed 2 nights 6/29 for $140 or $145. I can't remember. We must have bidded 4 times in 4 years and always lucked out in the Hau'pu tower. This time we were given the Priceline rooms, the ones w/o lanai. Previous years' stays were late May/early June so it wasn't crowded. Since it's late June, I noticed there were more people in the pool. The room wasn't as bad as the reviews on biddingfortravel.com, or at least the room we got on floor 9, not musty at all. It was smaller than regular room. No lanai but there is glass window looking out to the trees where the driveway is. We were higher than the rooftop and "had" to look down to see it. LOL. The bathroom was really small. When you open the door it barely missed the toilet by 1/2 inch. But room was clean and nice. With Marriott reward member, I believe I could have booked for $189 garden view room, but I was cheap.

I miss the $110/nt days. Was it several years ago? Sigh.

Only 38((#))((S)), but who's counting...((A))

Hanalei Jul 23rd, 2008 04:47 PM

Billy,
Are you going to be there longer than a week? We can get together if you wait for us to arrive.

iceeu2 Jul 23rd, 2008 04:53 PM

Yes, they were $110. Which timeshare did you purchase? Have you been there and stayed there before?

iceeu2 Jul 23rd, 2008 04:54 PM

Well well....The Beaver, Wally and Eddie all weighed in on this thread!

iamq Jul 23rd, 2008 05:09 PM

The least JohnD could do is to finish his last Kauai trip report before he goes again. You have 38 days to get off your okole!

Hanalei, our arrival date is all over the place at this point, but the plan is to arrive sometime late in June and stay for two weeks.

Hanalei Jul 23rd, 2008 05:20 PM

Iceeu2,
We bought the Cliffs Club. We rented from a wholly-owned owner a few years back. Buildings are not too close together. Great cliffs view. No restaurant nor gym onsite. There is pool and tennis court. It is not fancy like other national resorts, but it works for us. We bought it from a former owner after reading and following prices for about 3 years on ebay and the likes. But if airfare continues to go up, I am not sure if we did the right thing. Kids will graduate from high school in 2 years, so eventually costs to get there will drop significantly. :)
