Fill in my Vegas Blanks

Sat, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, Wed

Please Please Please - help with "out on the town" recommendations 28-32 year old couple, her first time to Vegas.

A Bar (I know I have my pick of thousands)
Laid back bar, dark is better, Live music is a plus, Jazz, R&B
Currently I have the Rio’s Voo Doo Bar and Monday Night at Double Down for variety.

Anything to do up at Lake Las Vegas? Is there a speedway that lets you race cars like at Dover in Delaware?

I will be spending a morning a Red Rock Canyon, hitting Freamount Street and Sam’s Town. Really looking for something exciting to do.

I would never over-plan for Vegas. Once you get there, you will be constantly entertained. You drop a few coins in a slot machine, win a little back, put it back in, and before you know it, you've been at it for 3 hours. You walk past a lounge and plan on standing to listen to one song but, suddenly, a seat opens up, you sit down, and before you know it, you've been there for 3 hours. You walk down the strip, stop to see the fountains, the volcano, etc. and you've killed 3 hours. You get the idea.

Rio's is good for the nightlife.

Relax, you'll have plenty to do and will have a fantastic time. And, by the way, just being in Vegas is exciting.

The Las Vegas Motor Speedway is about 20-30 minutes away from the Strip. You can do the Richard Petty driving experience thing. I have done the 3 hot laps with a driver, that was GREAT. Or you can take the course and go out and drive yourself. Check their website because the have been in the middle of re-doing the track, making higher banks in the turns, but I am almost certain it is completed now.

Completely agree with that response! Two places we really enjoyed - Show Bar at MGM Grand on Saturday night and Harrah's outdoor bar in the afternoon. Nine Fine Irishmen in NY NY is really nice and they have an excellent band. I wouldn't go on Saturday because that place will be lively any night. Vegas is always a good time, but you will be amazed at how much more active it is on a Saturday night compared to weekdays. NY NY also has a bar with dueling piano players, I think it was on Sunday night. It was so crowded we couldn't even get near the place. I'd skip Freemont Street. It wasn't worth the trip over and we were nearly robbed. It's worth it to see all of the free stuff - Bellagio Fountains, Mirage's Volcano, TI's show and the one at Ceasar's - I think it's Atlantis. You should also check out the lions at MGM Grand. The enclosure is completely glass. Check their website to see when they are there and what time they feed them. Really wild.

I like Fremont St. I think it's worth seeing. Just stay on Fremont St and don't wander off.

But I'm not sure why you're going to Sam's Town.

A decent source for nightlife would be Vegas.com or LasVegas.com (they're virtually the same site). The nightlife section of the sites has listings and description of most bars, clubs, and ultralounges, as well as some info on casino lounge acts. I've found the descriptions to be fairly accurate except that they make every bar seem like it is "THE" place to go, which obviously isn't true.

OK...call me stodgy for this idea but:

Hoover Dam is a wonder to see. 1/2 hour drive, couple hours touring. Exciting? Well that depends on what excites you.

How about trying out a machine gun? Thats available out in the desert.

Couples trip to a strip club?

Take a ride to Primm just for variety and tide on the roller coaster there.

I also am interested in what your attraction to Sams Town is?? It is kind of an older local crowd.

We did a rafting trip through the black canyon. It started at the base of Hoover Dam. Very interesting. Not sure what the weather will be like. We went in Sept and it was 100 degrees.

We also love Freemont Street. Take the bus, it drops you at the end of the street. We've also stayed there (Golden Nugget). Loved it and never felt unsafe.

www.cheapovegas.com has lots of fun suggestions, and they will help with the hotel recommendation, too.

I agree don't overplan. :-)

ITA on the cheapoveagas.com site. It has helped me in planning Vegas trips with a sense of humor. :-)
If I was 30 ish, I would be interested in the Palms, Rio, Hard Rock, NYNY and the Golden Nugget downtown.

We do a girls trip every year and love the Voo Doo Lounge, definately take her there!
Also, for some reason we always have to hit the Shadow Bar at Caesars, it is very laid back, has jugggling bartenders and has girls dancing behind the screen..it is really cool, even for us "girls"!

I really liked Shadow Bar, too. Classy-sexy. : )

You only have 5 days in Las Vegas so I would pass on both Lake Las Vegas and Sam's Town. You will be spending too much time driving around and there is a lot for first timers to do and see on the Strip and downtown.

Here is a link to a listing of free activities:
http://vegas4locals.com/free.html

You don't mention the dates of your trip which would help us give you some ideas.

I think the Double Down Saloon usually has a DJ rather than live music on Mondays. A better choice would be the Lounge at the Palms on Monday night when Santa Fe and the Fat City Horns play. http://www.santafeandthefatcityhorns.com/

For something exciting, how about indoor skydiving?

Dueling Pianos at either NYNY or Harrahs is great (available 7 nights per week) and the suggestion of Harrahs Carnaval Court (outside) is a good one. It good during the afternoon, but really at its best late night/early evening.

Monday-Thursday catch Big Elvis at the Barbary Coast - arrive early if you want a seat.

Fremont Street and the dumpy downtown casinos can be fun, but I would suggest going at night so you can see the overhead light show. Check out the following website to see if anything special is going on while you are there:
http://www.vegasexperience.com/
Also, look for the guy doing the paintings using spray paint.

If you are going to Red Rock Canyon, I would suggest including a visit to the newest casino in Las Vegas, Red Rock Resort.
