Ferry to Saulsalito-Walk across Golden Gate?

I am planning a trip Dec 9th. Would like to ferry to Saulsalito and then walk back across the Golden Gate Bridge. Has anyone done this? How long is it? Weather? Would be nice to know which way the wind is blowing..we caould always walk first and ferry second. Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated.

Some friends of mine recently rented bikes and rode across the bridge, then came back w/bikes on the ferry from Sausalito. They really enjoyed it. I know one bike rental place is called Blazing Saddles. Maybe ask them.

My husband wanted to bike across and ferry back, but we did not have the time. We talked to a young couple in their early thirties who did the bike thing. They loved it,but did say you must be in decent shape because it is a good trek.

Go across the bridge first, then hike down to the ferry and come back. Or do the bike thing - also go across the bridge first.

Otherwise, you are going UPHILL from Sausalito to the GG Bridge. If you really enjoy a stiff hike, this would be the way to go.

Have fun! Hope the weather breaks for you! It's going to cold across the bridge, so bring a jacket.

My husband and I took the public transportation bus across the bridge then walked back. Walked all the way back to the Wharf, mind you - quite a haul but a great hike. We loved it! It is one of my favorite memories of all of the trips we've made across the good ol' USA!

easytraveler - hope it doesn't break - we're having record high temps. High 70s.

For those planning to bike across the bridge. On weekends, I believe you must ride on the west walkway - which is not the side with the view of The City.

Second what ET suggests-in addition to the steep uphill to the bridge from Sausalito, there are no sidewalks and you will be walking on the edge of the road . Not something I would recommend. As for weather, so knows. Its sunny and warm and in the low 70's here in SF today--not that usual for this time of year. It's supposed to stay this way through Thanksgiving, but who knows what we will get next. Just have alternate plans for rain.

The best walking option would be to take a bus or taxi across the bridge and then walk back across the bridge toward the city and it's views.

I don't think combining Saulsalito and the ferry with the GG walk works without bikes.
