Ferry Services to Lana'i Any Suggestions?

We are going to Maui in April (2009) and have heard that a ferry trip to Lanai is a must. I haven't seen anything (past 6 months) on the forum that mentions anything about a ferry.

We would like to go for a day trip (not necessarily an organized trip-rather just do something on our own...). Any suggestions? Help appreciated...

Here is the site for the ferry,

However, given the price, $30 each way, you might want to check out an organized trip, which includes much more. Trilogy offers one of the best. Here is their web site.

April is a great time for the Expeditions ferry trip to Lana`i as it doubles as a whale watch. When we did our day trip we rented a jeep on Lana`i with Dollar rental for some awesome offroading and they picked us up right at the dock. Also recommend keeping the Bonine handy, in case of rough surf.

Thought you had better take a look at the following:

Hopefully the Superferry will be shut down until all environmental issues have been resolved.

Hawaii can use a ferry system, but one that operates within the law.

i won't ever take the Superferry because of the way they operate. Nothing but sweetheart deals to allow them to operate & with very little concern for the environment.

KGMB TV just announced that Superferry is ceasing operations indefinitely while they sort out their options. They plan one more trip to Maui to take passengers back to Maui & to pick up passengers to Oahu.

<blue>mnisann<black>, Rest assured the Expeditions ferry to Lanai is not the "Superferry". Another Maui ferry destination option is aboard the Maui/Molokai Princess to Molokai.

The Lanai ferry from Maui has nothing to do with Superferry.

The Lanai ferry has been operating for at least 20 years, without troubles. It is a much smaller boat, and one can certainly experience a bit of queasiness, althought the trip isn't too long. It's a lovely ride and you are likely to see whales or dolphin, depending on the time of year.

Caveat...

Many Lanai snorkel trips have been cancelled due to weather lately. Further, some boats are leaving dock and going out 10 minutes then returning at which time they do not offer refunds as they 'attempted' the crossing.

Understandable? I dunno. The economy is tough but stiffing your customer isnt they way to make ends meet. IMO
