Ferry from Long Island NY to?
Is there a ferry from Long Island to Mass. or Rhode Island? My final destination is Martha's Vineyard and I have to get to the Ferry in Woods HOle and I'm sick of driving the whole way up. Thanks

Only direct service Montauk to Martha's Vineyard is from this company: www.vikingfleet.com. Their "infrequent" service now means just ONE sailing all season on 8/13/06. Passenger only.
The only regular, reasonable ferry service is from Orient Point to New London, and it's a car ferry. www.longislandferry.com That can cut down some of your driving. Then you can take a passenger ferry from Quonset Point, RI (south of Providence) to MV: www.vineyardfastferry.com If you need your car on MV, then you have to drive out to Wood's Hole. |
There is also a ferry from Port Jefferson to Bridgeport Ct. which saves some driving west if you're mid island. Here's a page with links to all the ferries

You could also take viking fleets ferry from Montauk to Block Island, RI then go from Block Island to Point Judith.
|
But the OP won't have the car at Point Judith anymore, and it would be pretty hard to go from there to Quonset Point.

True, true, true! I forgot that the viking ferry from Montauk is passenger only. Good thing you caught that rkkwan!

Your only solution really is Orient Point to New London and make your way from there....
