Feeding teens in San Francisco
 

I' m taking two teen nieces (14 and 17) to San Francisco for four nights over the 4th of July weekend. Would appreciate suggestions for interesting places to eat--not too formal but good food in fun settings. We're staying in Union Square but willing to travel. Thanks!

You could go for dim sum -- I liked Hong Kong Lounge II on Geary near Arguello in the Richmond--you order from a paper checklist and they bring the small plates as they make them. Delish. You can easily get there by bus.

Another good option is one of the taquerias in the Mission. That will get you to that hopping neighborhood (don't miss Bi-Rite Creamery or Mitchell's for great ice cream!).

Ferry Building

Cliff House, but it will be very busy over that weekend out at the beach.

Ferry Building is a good suggestion, lots of inteesting choices there. Original Joe's in North Beach is an old school SF Italian restaurant, generous portions so be hungry.

Walk around Chinatown and pick a place you like. Ditto for along Chestnut or Union Streets.

Same for down by Ghiradelli Square. Way back when - having Shrimp cocktails by Fisherman's Wharf was the thing to do.

Also in the Mission they might enjoy Delfina' Pizza on 18th near Valencia, and Tartine Bakery for sandwiches--join the always present line out the door for a slice of SF life.

The newly expanded Hog Island Oyster Co at the Ferry Building--they have more than oysters.

And Greens at Fort Mason-- harbor views, GG Bridge in the distance, tasty and not expensive for lunch.

I would second the recommendation of Delfina Pizza, but there are loads of options in the Mission District (mostly on Valencia Street, not on Mission Street, the latter of which remains mostly ungentrified). I just think they'd like the atmosphere. If you can get into Lolo, friends of ours just recommended it - tapas - the place is always hopping.

In Chinatown, R&G Lounge is very good, and of course, the atmosphere outside is great (but do wander up and down Stockton Street instead of (or in addition to) Grant Avenue. Grant is touristy, Stockton is "real".
