The reviews look pretty good on TripAdvisor, and the location seems decent based on stududley's recommendations (I think?). Does anyone know anything about it? I'm looking for a decent place to stay, well located, for under $200/night. We will not have a rental car. This is $180/night.

I don't know anything about it - I just looked for it on GoogleMaps and the 4 reviews that appear make it sound like a nightmare.

How long are you staying in the city and what do you want to do/see? That area is fine for walking Marina Green, Fort Mason, Ghirardelli, Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39 areas. Those areas provide great vistas of the Bay, Golden Gate and Alcatraz. It's more blatantly tourist-oriented (shops/restaurants/etc) than other parts of the city. Staying downtown (Union Sq, Embarcadero, near-South of Market, Financial District) would be a better location for shopping, restaurants, transportation options, theater, nightlife. Also, if you're arriving from SFO, you can easily take BART from the airport to downtown. If you would rather stay downtown check your dates at Hotel Rex https://www.jdvhotels.com/rex/ and The Mosser www.themosser.com/ as they could have rates less expensive than $180. Look on hotwire.com too.

I'm not sure I'd want to stay on Lombard St., period.

Lots of traffic to/from the GG bridge. Parking is almost impossible in that area.

Downtown, try the Hotel Cornell. Relatively inexpensive for a downtown hotel. http://www.cornellhotel.com/rooms.html

I stay in that area at the motor lodges on Lombard for free parking when I come to the city with a car. Yes, they are well located to shopping and dining, but not to many of the tourist sights.

I have recently looked at more centrally located but budget hotels in the city. Check out the Hotel Cornell, the Marines Memorial Club, or the Hotel Abri. They are all within your budget.

If you have a car Lombard St makes the most sense. I stay in the area when I drive into the city instead of taking the train.

I have not stayed there but have driven by it lots of times. Doesn't look great to me, pretty typical of the motels along there.

If I was staying on Lombard w/ a car I'd probably use the Travelodge at the end of the street across from the Presidio (NOT the other travleodge farther up the street - its not very nice)

The Presidio travelodge doesn't really look like much from the outside but it is very clean, the rooms have all been updated and the bathrooms are very nice, and the staff is helpful.

I recently spent a lot of time trying to find the same thing - a decent, well-located hotel for under $200/night! Thanks to a tip here, I booked a room at the Chancellor near Union Square for $180 at booking.com. Perhaps try that site if you haven't yet. You can see the specific hotel before booking, so there's less mystery than Hotwire or the name-your-own-price Priceline option.

Oh, great! I hope it works out for both of us! I had friends stay there several years ago, and the TripAdvisor reviews look fine, so I'm crossing my fingers. :)

Oh, that is so much better than the Seaside Inn, both hotel and neighborhood for tourists without a car!
